They could not have done the clicker scene better, that somehow perfectly matched how intense actually playing through those sequences are just as a viewer The Bill stuff looks like the first major departure from the game judging by the preview for next week but at this point I fully trust them already
The infected scenes are definitely going to be super effective in these smaller set pieces with only a couple of them in a room at a time.
The choice to have Ellie getting scratched or whatever in the museum to add more weight to her immune status and Tess’s bite was also a great creative decision.
So those clickers in the building…was that the fungus growing out of their heads and that’s why they couldn’t see? And it seemed to be giving their heads a bit of a “shield” from bullet penetration, yes? They also didn’t seem to have tendrils coming out of their mouths like the more fresh ones. Or are the answers to my questions all a spoiler I’m gonna learn about later in the show?
Great ep. Loved the pre-outbreak opening. Loved the fungus/tendrils change in place of spores. Clickers were creepy af. The set production is spot on. Literally feels like environments you'd play in the game.
I love that as a non-game player I can still kind of tell what shots seemed directly from the game. Like I assumed when it was happening that them looking over the city was pulled right from the game. also looked/felt like when they were behind the car looking at the crashed truck in front of the State House was a shot from the game, but haven’t seen confirmation of that on Twitter
I don't think that the biology of the clickers are ever explicitly explained really? Can't remember. I think it's just a mutation of the cordyceps. They've been infected longer than the typical infected we've seen so far, and the fungus has grown all over their face, blinding them and forcing them to develop a heightened sense of hearing.
Yeah in the games they are harder to kill and are stronger in exchange for being blind and having to use echo-location. The mushroom growths begin to act as a protective shell for them. They can easily kill you in one hit in the game where as you can take some hits from the runners.
I should say too in game they can’t be killed with regular melee combat and can only be stealth killed with guns, knives/shivs, or reinforced bars/pipes etc.
The reloading bit was amazing. Could not imagine a better way to translate the general gameplay vibes.
Had to check myself after the lighter scene, snapped back into it once that was resolved and realized how fucking stressed out I was lmao
Some pretty big changes this week, but still on board. I know the tendril 'kiss' is going to get some slack, but i think it worked toillustrate the connectivity of all the infected better than a bite would of. Why is he a hack?
as a non-game player I'm definitely bummed we lost Tess so early, she was my favourite character by a large margin but it's a smart way to raise the stakes and get Joel and Ellie on their own. Anna Torv killed that last scene tho, when she said "I never asked you for anything, to feel the way I felt" that shit had years of weight behind it. great performance also remind me in future: eating and watching this show is a bad move
I took the kiss as a way to connect with her. She was already infected, so she didn’t need bitten. I took it as him sensing the fungus in her and this was a way to literally connect with it.
That and basically it sensing "Okay she has it in her, but it'll work faster if we get to her brain faster", so the fungus is literally driving its host to get into her mouth so it can work to her brain quicker
Joel moving things to get to a new area, Joel helping Tess up, the reloading. Love it lol. Clicker scene is perfect
Ellie mentioned it earlier in the episode when she's asking them if some of the infected that she's heard about are real or not. She says something along the lines of "ones where the fungus has grown out of their face/brain so much that they're blind and have to use echolocation". But essentially you hit the nail on the head. I've definitely always thought of it acting as armor or a shield of some sort.
Oh okay I need to rewatch and pay more attention then haha, must have been when I was looking at my phone for the football score or something
