I know literally nothing about the video game. I thought the pilot was good. I wasn't blown away or anything, but definitely worth the watch and I will continue to do so. It's a little weird for me though after just finishing The Walking Dead recently after that aired for 12 years (and I definitely had TWD fatigue). I know/hope there will be differences, but it's a little weird jumping straight from one post-apocalypse world to another in such a short span.
Can anyone elaborate on what changed when they smushed the first two episodes into just one for the pilot...? I was absolutely loving the 2003 in Austin section, but it did feel like we spent enough time there. Honestly, the second half of the episode was slightly weaker, so if they cut down on the Boston stuff to get things moving it may have been the right call.
They didn't exclude anything as far as game story goes in that early portion, so I'm going to assume that the episode would have had more time with Sarah pre apocolypse.
damn yeah I would've loved some more 2003 stuff personally. feels like we coulda got to know Tommy a bit more before the timeskip
PS-every time one of these shows comes out, everyone always talks about how they wish we had more time with the "First night" and every time the discussion somewhere turns into "Well we've all seen that before so we don't want to tell that story again"...and I'm like, where have we seen that story before?? The only example I can think of is Night of The Living Dead, and all the other mainstream zombie movies after that mostly would only give you a small glimpse of the First night before some sort of time jump. Give me a whole ass movie on the chaos and confusion of the first night. One novel that I think did the first night REALLY well (from what I remember, it's been years since I read it) is Dead City by Joe McKinney. Would love to see that get a film adaptation. but also this caused me to google him and holy shit he died last year. Pretty crazy.
Loved this game so much but haven’t played it since it first came out. First 45 min has me sold. I’ll watch the rest tomorrow
Almost an hour in… explosion just happened… this is really boring. edit: I know nothing about the game or show going in.
I've always thought this. One of my favourite elements of the games is the notes left behind that you find throughout, and reading what people went through from outbreak onwards. The confusion and sadness of it all, including outbreak day would make for good T.V.
Yeah I loved the tension of that first night. Well directed and pretty white knuckled. I’m always wishing I’d get to see more of the initial outbreak because the sheer panic and confusion is really interesting to me and then there’s always the inevitable time jump. The War of The Worlds series, while not the best show by any means, really disappointed me when they started the second season by skipping ahead in time like they couldn’t figure out how to close out the dangling threads from the first season so they just decided to start a bunch of new ones and hope you’d be okay with it. The initial fear of the unknown is so much more interesting to me, I don’t know. That said, I did absolutely love this pilot and I’m all in on whatever comes next.
That show loved insulting the audience I swear to god. So many episodes were just like, “hey this is all useless filler but wait until the very end of the episode where something MIGHT happen before we roll credits halfway through it:)” I gave up about a season into Negan
I could definitely do an entire series where every episode is from a different perspective or the same night/event.
Interesting. I never watched Z Nation much outside of keeping it on while flipping through channels sometimes, but I'll have to look into this. Yeah that would be REALLY cool. I would love that. And not to belabor my oft repeated refrain from, but this is where you could really extend World War Z into a full fledged series that lasts a few seasons if you really really wanted to. I've been saying all along to do a one season miniseries, but you could probably make 2 seasons out of the first three sections (warnings, blame, and Great Panic) if you really wanted to, and then get another 2 seasons out of the rest of the book at a minimum.
The title sequence was created by Elastic. They also did Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, True Detective, His Dark Materials, Watchmen, Westworld, The Leftovers, Deadwood, along with some Netflix properties (Daredevil, The Night Manager, Luke Cage, The Crown) ..to name a few.
I can tell an Elastic title sequence from a mile away. They do great work but they do all feel a little similar
