Two things I think Joel could have said to make things slightly better… could’ve have told Matrix dude that loving his wife would be to keep her safe and that she’d do the same. Could’ve told Ellie that there was no guarantee a cure would work. And she’d die for nothing if it didn’t
Good episode. Porch scene was great but I’m kinda conflicted on other things, will post more tomorrow.
Also, let’s say they did make a cure from her blood… would she be enough to cure the entire world? Like what happens when she dies and there’s no more blood? New people start getting infected, etc. Or even logistics of administering that cure.
This episode was absolutely fantastic, and I kind of think it makes sense to basically put all of the Joel flashbacks into one episode like this even though it greatly differs from how the game does it (to my memory). Pascal is an amazing actor, he was so heartbreaking this whole episode
These are great questions, and part of the reason why I have never been supportive of the cure (even if it might have been possible). The logistics of a cure are completely different than in a functioning society. Joel was selfish, but I still agree with his decision.
That occured to me too but then bro didn't communicate that to Ellie at all?? It also made me wonder if they ever study infected ppl like that. I guess the risks would outweigh any scientific curiosity, but it was an interesting observation and made me wanna know more
I swear the amount of times I shout either "just communicate!" Or "go to therapy!" At my tv lol. Not this show specifically but just in general!
Think this is the second best episode of the whole season, behind only the obvious one. I’ve been more lukewarm on this season that most here but this was a homerun. Seeing Joel and Ellie interact in a more wholesome way felt like a warm blanket of comfort, a slip back into season 1. And watching the slow decay of that felt very real thinking back on my own relationship with certain parental figures. And the end, with Joel and Ellie talking and Ellie saying she wanted to try and forgive him was really powerful. Not sure why they moved it forward so much but it was very powerful. It definitely got me.
Absolutely. A podcaster during LOST would constantly bring up that so many issues would not happen if the characters just talked to each other haha
i can't remember if s1 of the show covered it specifically, but the fireflies plan was that the cordyceps in her brain was what they had to extract to make the cure, not her blood. She was guaranteed to die during surgery, but the cure was not guaranteed to work like you pointed out and that Joel should have/could have mentioned to her.
This is the correct take IMO. It's really the only reason I think the cure debate has any merit at all because, like other people in here have said, there are too many logistical issues with making/distributing a cure for me to buy that it would actually do anything. Joel did believe it would work, though, and he still chose Ellie over the world.
I personally think it means the cure debate is a waste of time and energy. The logistics of a cure in this world don’t matter. Joel would have done it even if there was a 100% certainty that it would work. Which makes the cure logistics a non issue.
Phrased that wrong. I don't think debating over whether or not the cure would work has any merit/purpose, but the cure does need to be a factor in Joel's decision making, and the only way I can get behind the cure as a plot device at all is if Joel believes in it.
Neil touched briefly on this, I just saw this on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/thelastofus/s/U0A4HwnLff
