I really enjoyed this and feel like it will click and get recognition. Ill watch again before i have deeper thoughts but breifly: Having just replayed part 1, there are a LOT of changes, but nothing negative, and most take the somewhat flimsy video game logic, and sturdy it up for the TV format. For example, it makes sense that Joel is already worried about Tommy and will continue the journey vs lets go across country and see my estranged brother who may or may not be there I also dont envy show writers as there's always a split on pacing. Ive already read that a few people thought this was slow, but even as a game player, the info flowed fast and often in high drama moments. It was not slow at all to me and a packed first episode. They do need to jump in and show and explain the infected sooner rather than later. That was the only thing that was slightly glossed over.
I loved everything about the 2003 scenes, but the slowness for me was in 2023 Boston. Still very excited to see where this show takes us. I know nothing about the games.
I like that there was a portrait of George W Bush in Sarah's classroom, both 9/11 and the cordycep outbreak happening under his presidency is canon
I like the timeline change from the game. The world essentially stuck in time in the immediate post-9/11 era for 20 years is a really nice touch.
The days where everyone was like "nobody will ever make a good video game adaptation" seems like it was an eternity ago, even though it was like 5 years ago.
Man, the set designs really are straight out of the game. They seemed to nail every little detail. Pedro and Bella are delivering their performances. They really do feel like Joel and Ellie to me. I knew they were going to make us spend some time with Sarah before that scene happened just to make it even more heartbreaking.
Yes I meant to call out the truck scene in my initial post, that was INCREDIBLE. I know it's a super fucked up and intense scene but I was smiling so hard, I can't remember ever seeing a sequence so faithfully adapted from a video game before
I want to rewatch the premiere but I also don't want to go through the Sarah scene again lol not sure if I want to put myself through the emotional distress again
Hard to tell if my bias for playing the games is effecting how I view the show, but that was one of the best “pilot” episodes I have seen in a long long time
ahh I won't be able to watch this comfortably for another couple of weeks until we get the house sorted. Glad it seems to be good.
I have committed the cardinal sin and viewed the comments on the recent IGN post on IG regarding the shots that are lifted straight from the game. People are still out here unprovoked shitting on the second game for being “woke garbage” lol.
im honestly more excited to see the reactions from those who never played the game than the actual show itself that said, first episode was absolutely stellar and everything I wanted it to be I can't believe this show is going to convince me to buy the remake on ps5
Yeah It's making me really want to play it again but I'm trying to hold out until I see the remake on sale for like 40 lol
Same. I’ve already bought it twice, I’m having a hard time rationalizing paying $70 to own it a third..lol
