The more I think about this and discuss it the more I like it tbh

Just got out of a screening. Absolutely rocked. Affleck was great as was everyone else really. The duel itself was brutal

Shame this has bombed hard at the box office

The duel is so good because it goes on long after anyone in the audience would have found it thrilling or exciting. It is not like Medieval Times with glorious colorful knights riding around in style, but a fight to the death in the mud and the filth. By the end it isn't a victory so much as a relief that it is over. The completely disaffected way that Driver's body is stripped and discarded helps to hammer it home as well.

The duel is fucking BRUTAL. Hadn’t read up on the result beforehand, either, so I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

This is gonna sound weird but I kinda hope it has an even worse second weekend so they just get it up on streaming so people start seeing it.

Also, the way he completely refuses to admit he raped Marguerite, even when it means his literal death, partly because he knows what will happen if he does but MOSTLY because he legitimately doesn’t think he did anything wrong. Speaks a lot to the reason why we still deal with this shit 700 years later.

Even in his own version of events he still had to chase her and physically hold her down. That is the rosiest scenario he could come up with.

I got the subtext and message, and I still hated this.

This was fucking great. Definitely hits you over the head with the message but as others have said it’s one that people need to be hit with. The aftermath of the duel is so bleak and powerful, so much conveyed without a word of dialogue. God level Affleck just a bonus

Maybe lots of people didn’t see it cause it is bad, Ridley.

It received favorable reviews from both audiences and critics, so no, general audiences didn't skip it because they thought it was bad. Most signals for general audience would point to it being good.

Ridley is definitely giving off old man yells at cloud vibes, of course. People didn't see it because we've still in a pandemic that has accelerated viewing habits to watch movies at home unless it is a massive stakes blockbuster from a well established IP.

When I went to see The Last Duel an adult woman had her phone brightness all the way up and her keyboard click sounds on. I said “hey, will you put your phone away?” And she rolled her eyes at me & kept texting. I loudly said “are you fucking kidding me?”

and then you challenged her to a duel right?

I went to find an employee but they didn’t do anything. When her husband or whatever came back from the concession stand I heard her complaining about me but neither of them said anything to me at the time or after the movie ended

I was so annoyed I couldn’t focus on the movie and missed the first 10 minutes or so

Before that incident even happened while the previews were still showing, a group of people were talking loudly and a woman said “are you guys going to talk the whole time? Because you haven’t stopped talking since you walked in” so seemed like a tense showing for everyone lol

Man, I don't want to take away from your point because you're absolutely right, but now all I can think about is someone spending $50 to see a movie and it's giving me real end of the world vibes.

I'm okay with people talking or texting during the previews, but at soon as the lights dim that's the universal signal to just be quiet and put your phone away.

I'll never forget the first 15 minutes of Widows. Someone's phone kept going off and this boomer woman kept side eyeing me and signaling me to turn off my phone and then later discovered it was her husband's.
