Yeah, thought this was a pretty interesting and well acted movie.

But it should definitely have some kind of warning that it features several graphic, unflinching depictions of sexual assault (Not a big spoiler, as you should be warned if you're sensitive to that). The advertising seems to be leaning more on this being a "Gladiator"-type movie and not a battle for a woman's agency.

  2. I keep seeing the trailer for this in the theater and it always inexplicably rubs me the wrong way; maybe it's moreso to do with Damon/Affleck involvement than with the trailer itself. It feels off that after the Casey Affleck controversy this is the movie they decide to make.
    From this person's full review:

I'm not about to judge a film I haven't seen, I just... don't want to see it.

This is much better than I expect from Scott at this point in his career. I happened to show Gladiator to class last week and this one much better deconstructs the allure of violence and battle.

The world can always use more Rashomon references.

They did a good job making this feel modern, both with the gender politics and the fact that people were annoyed that their workforce had the audacity to die of the plague
Adam Driver has the perfect face for a medieval movie and this was a good role for him, I can picture him just reading Latin for fun
also felt right that Matt Damon was petty and annoying and Ben Affleck was basically hedonism bot
Jodie Comer's first real movie roles being a Ryan Reynolds action movie and a possible Oscar nomination is wild , but she is good in this

I mean, it’s not there willy-nilly. It’s central to the plot and thesis of the movie. Whether or not it should have been less brutal and more implied, that’s a better debate to have.

I really loved what Alex Lawther did with the King.

I totally get why only tentpole movies with younger audiences are thriving but it's still a bummer to see

Even with Kylo Ren on the poster.

I wonder how Dune ends up doing, especially now that it has leaked. It needs to make a lot more than that and they don't have a big purple space monster fighting Iron Man to sell.

  14. So... Is this a good feminist film or...?

I don’t think I know how to answer that question. I do know that people full-stop throwing it in the trash because 83 year-old Ridley Scott didn’t perfectly nail the nuances of depicting rape in a film in 2021 seems like the wrong way to come at it.

not sure I'd go that far but it's a really good depiction of toxic masculinity

…or at least, that’s a factor that isn’t being brought up as much as others certainly

It also wasn’t really advertised well. I suspect they’re doing this with all the Fox movies though. I just don’t think they care much for adult-oriented films.

I thought this was pretty fantastic, easily one of my favourites of the year.

I feel like the whole point was to show the differences between his and her experience, I'm not sure that would have worked without it being the way it was.

I have to say I enjoyed Ridley Scott’s medieval rashomon. This was better than I expected.

This made me want to revisit Rashomon. It was always one of my least favourite Kurosawa's but I think this actually gave me a better idea of what that was doing.

Rashomon is an obvious classic but it was one of the more boring Kurosawa films. It is funnier to see the references.
