No "Boy" is a little bit of a bummer, but I did get a chuckle out of how they intro'd the news, starting off with the word boy. Seemed like a wink / reference to me, but I could be reading too much into it. I'm really excited to hear some of the alternate versions. Their descriptions in the press a while back about how a few of the songs changed significantly over the course of recording were very intriguing.
There was a song they recorded for the album called "Boy" that Brandon talked about in the press before the release that was ultimately cut from the album. I believe he described it as being autobiographical and about him and his experience directly. He said they didn't think it really fit the album but hinted that we would probably get to hear it at some point.
I trust them that they say it didn't quite fit / work with the album, but just conceptually to me that sounded like a cool idea: having one song on the album be straight autobiographical. Like if the album is a collection of short stories about life in Nephi, telling about all sorts of various people, but then having one story be straight up from his point-of-view and about his younger life sounded intriguing to me. Plus, I believe he said it was a song that all of them said they liked a lot and thought was very strong.
I think he said "Boy" was really the impetus for the album itself. He said he kept adding verses until he realized he had an album’s worth of material he wanted to say, and I would assume that led to going in a completely different direction sonically once they decided on that path. If I remember correctly, they were already working on an entirely different album in September 2020 (with songs like "Diamonds on Black Velvet") which "Boy" was a part of. So maybe it will pop up on this new album that they're apparently working on, which I'm guessing is derived from those pre-Pressure Machine sessions. Or at least a bonus track. Otherwise, I can't imagine why they would leave it off the deluxe for this album. Then again, they're notorious for mentioning songs that never see the light of day.
thanks all. pumped to hear more tracks from pressure machine but also secretly hoping they don't release any vinyl for it as i don't have room right now haha
Deluxe is out. Really cool to hear how some of these songs progressed, but I think they made the right choice for every album cut. That said, the above rips.
im so attached to the original getting by, hearing these new versions is so weird and I kinda hate them haha
I just listened to these and wow, yeah, I had no idea they were going to be that different. I…don’t know how to feel though I do agree that The Getting By II rips. I’m just very attached to this album as is and this is a jarring listen.
Getting By II slaps, I like it more than the album cut tbh. that second verse is so much better than the "my people were told they'd prosper in this land" one lol
Getting By II and III are both great. III especially for me, it sounds like Fleetwood Mac at their weirdest and that bassline is dirty and cool. Makes the lyrics pretty eerie too. II definitely sounds like comes straight out of Imploding The Mirage, I can hear bits of the title track and Dying Breed in there. I don't care much for the alternate versions of West Hills or Runaway Horses, sadly
New single this summer, have to hope the album will be out before the end of the year? They're on a roll.
The idea that a band could go as off-script as Pressure Machine, after a career-reinvigorating record like Imploding, and have it be in the actual, honest conversation as their best collective work just does NOT happen. In any genre, anywhere. These guys are on another level, on a different planet.
My fiancé just got Pressure Machines on vinyl today so I was extremely amped. It was my AOTY last year and still is played regularly in rotation.
