I'm starting to really love this album. I was a little lukewarm on it on first couple of listens but keeping with it and reading that NME interview I found really interesting and been really getting into some of these tracks West Hills, In The Car Outside and Pressure Machine are early favorites. The falsetto in Pressure Machine is pretty incredible to me
just pressed play on this and yeah west hills is gorgeous. get wild pink / trace mountains vibes too which is obv up my alley
I can’t imagine listening to this without the interviews but that’s just me. whoever said listening to this while driving in the Midwest was spot on
Oh wow lol I’ve never had to click on the “see more” before for listed albums. Thanks for the heads up!
Desperate Things is such next level song writing. Brandon’s lyrics on this record in general have gone up a notch, but the way he ties that chorus into the three distinct verse narratives blows me away. A really compelling story and the band scored it perfectly. Few listens in and the production is so great. Imaginative and sprawling at times while intimate and grounded at others. I’ll say it a billion times- I hope they keep this production team around for a long while. Also really impressed with Ronnie’s range behind the kit. I’ve always thought of him as a master level player, but to hear him stretch into these new styles they’re exploring so effortlessly has been an added treat. Can’t wait to listen to this one traveling through the mountains with my wife tomorrow.
Lol I literally had the song titles, artist, and album name abbreviated so I wouldn’t spoil anything by accident on Last.fm. That day was so wild, I got all the record info at once… was like a surprise release for me only. Usually when I get a record early, by the time it’s out I have either worn it into the ground or just kind of lost interest. I have been listening to this nonstop since Friday. On reflection, I think my favorite thing about this is how Brandon still maintains his writing style while telling these highly specific stories. My favorite line is “she laughed it off like lemonade” — just an entire world in that lyric.
I know what you mean (eg. review scores) but, in the main, that still felt like grudging acceptance that they’ve stuck around and resonated with people outside the usual “tastemaker” value judgements. Like “OK, they’re big and anthemic and dumb but very good at it”. Pressure Machine is something different (although their best music has always struck the same level of emotional cords with me as a fan).
i’m really gonna miss the new Foxing but i genuinely dont think im gonna listen to anything else all year
As a person like most I would imagine who experienced a very real crisis of “what the fuck does my time on the planet mean and am I who I actually want to be?” during the last year, “In Another Life” absolutely guts me.
Speaking I go that PF review. The last line of it is so douchey considering the author has likely never been there & is counter to the point they are trying to make of Flowers’ lyrics. “…the people of Nephi deserve better.” give me a break, haha
