This album is phenomenal. I've only been able to listen to it all the way through a handful of times so far, but it's really fucking good. So many standout moments on this thing. On my first listen, I was grinning ear-to-ear like a kid during the instrumental section of "In The Car Outside". I was already pretty blown away by the entirety of "Desperate Things", but I think I came out of my seat at that moment towards the end. The entirety of the title track. The only weak parts for me at this point are "Terrible Thing" and "Runaway Horses". Both leave me cold and are honestly pretty boring. The lyrics are there, and "Terrible Thing" in particular is absolutely devastating, but musically and as songs overall there's just not much there. A lot of people have listed both of these as standouts so I'm gonna give them some more time. I find "Terrible Thing" really hard to get through and just want to skip past it, especially coming as the third song - it feels like it stops the album dead in it's tracks just as it's getting going. As soon as "The Getting By" finishes, I want to start "West Hills" again immediately.
Def not a bad song. Terrible Thing was my favorite on one listen. I don't think anything touches my top Killers songs, but a great album. Don't think I immediately put it above Imploding though. Definitely needs more listens obviously.
They remastered "Quiet Town" from the earlier version I had (and retitled it from "In This Quiet Town", which I liked better because it echoed "In The Car Outside" and "In Another Life") and it sounds even better. That little piano line towards the end especially, wow. As I said, they did the audio interviews before the version of the album I have and I've never heard them. I think they make for an interesting listen so far but if it's between almost every song I will definitely be sticking with the abridged version on future listens.
Yeah, the interview bits are interesting but I definitely don’t need to hear them every time I listen.
I've definitely felt like this album is a grower. The first few times I listened to it, I just wanted to hear from "In The Car Outside" to the end because tracks 1-6 were sooooo slow for the most part. It's just such a different mode for them.
This is a 10/10 for me and easily album of the year. Being from a small rural town in West Virginia, I feel like I know these characters and the tragedies and situations brought up all too well. It all hits me really hard. Love it.
God damn they did it again, really enjoyed my first listen. I hope they keep making records with Everett and Rado indefinitely.
most of the interstitials on this really work for me tbh. the first one really establishes the tense mood that runs through a lot of this and the "higher power" one that starts "Cody" is honestly chills-inducing. I could do without the one that starts "Car", though, it doesn't add much of anything ofc still really glad they put out an abridged version for playlists or when I want to spin a single song - good move
When Brandon first went into falsetto on the title track I legit thought they got Weyes Blood back for another song
Right now….Definitely this Battle Born Hot fuss Samstown Pressure Machine Mirage Wonderful Day and age
After first listen, this is may be a contender for my favorite Killers record. Goddamn they killed it on this one.
