fire in bone is cool. I haven't heard this full lp but everything I have heard is really good. dying breed is next level. never thought I'd actually dig this band. war on drugs is also extremely worth a listen
Don’t think Adam has any writing credits on this, he just played keyboards on Blowback. The War On Drugs’ producer Shawn Everett has a bunch of production and co-writing credits, though.
I'm not going to rank them all because they're all great but my top 4 is: My Own Soul's Warning My God Dying Breed When the Dreams Run Dry
I listened to the whole album again today while driving and "Fire In Bone" has gotten better and better for me with every listen. It's not my least favorite track at all at this point. I find this album extremely solid and consistent all the way through. And I love the track "Imploding The Mirage" and think it's a great closer to this album.
I'm not ready to rank yet, but I will say: 1) Surprised Lightning Fields is so low on so many lists 2) On Fire in Bone - the parts where he actually says "Fire in Bone" (which he does a lot) kinda bug me - but then that massive chorus kicks in and wham!
Awesome review, Craig. I think it might've made me appreciate the album even more, which seems crazy haha.
Great review! Re War On Drugs I like that project a lot but don't love it probably because it is so focused on the sound -- like Adam wants to take Tunnel of Love and take it to every possible euphoric extreme, which is awesome -- but I've always been more interested in lyrics. They aren't bad but definitely take a backseat for War on Drugs (by design) imo. Interesting to see so many people say the title track on this new Killers album is their least favourite. Has been stuck in my head all day.
While you were OUT THERE chewing on fat for probable cause - - I let go! while you were out there weighing odds I was imploding the mirage Yeah I love this song.
Oh yeah there’s some real clunkers on this album. You gotta just laugh it off. My favorite is “she’s chewing on a Tic Tac; a good man is a mystery, she’s lookin’ fer CLUES.”
Never minded the Tic Tac line. I read a really great analysis of that song and why that line in particular is so important, I love it even more now. I’ll try to find it.
I thought the “looking for clues” line was about the anxiety around men in public, caused by a protagonist who may have suffered abuse.
Apologies if it’s already been discussed but does anyone know if Alex Cameron was involved in the making of this album? (His influence is all over it in any case - the title track especially...and watching the Stephen Colbert performance it seems Flowers is even going for the same look)
Thanks, I did the sensible thing and googled it too after I wrote and was very surprised about the title track! Dying Breed is a clear example but I can’t see how Alex isn’t a factor on that last track.
Hmm. Maybe I’ll have to give this a try. I loved Battleborn which apparently was not the consensus lol, and never bothered with Wonderful Wonderful because the singles didn’t grab me. If anyone has a few songs off that album that aren’t The Man sounding stuff maybe I’ll give them a try too. I still haven’t even listened to Flowers solo debut which everyone raves about.
I’d say try “Rut,” “Some Kind of Love,” and “Tyson vs Douglas” from that album. Those were my favorites, as a big Battle Born fan.
