Yeah I made the right call getting a Switch! http://www.ign.com/articles/2018/08/20/grandia-and-grandia-ii-coming-to-switch-in-hd-remaster
I picked up YS VIII a little while back and am just getting into it. I like Xenoblade but the Ys battle system is a ton more fun, game also has some fun mechanics that are refreshing as well. Very happy with YsVIII and am going to look into all the others.
Glad you mentioned this. I bought this during a GameStop B2G1 sale awhile ago and still haven't even touched it. Guess I'll throw it on the list! Been back on Octopath this weekend. Honestly I'm just having fun grinding and realizing that the strength of this game really is found in the battle system/job system. I haven't touched story stuff in three days of playing, just getting all my characters a little over-leveled so I can try to blaze through the rest of the game.
The battle system is so fluid that I love grinding and I hardly ever run from battles unless I'm doing a sidequest. I've finished all Chapter 4 stories and unlocked access to the final dungeon but I'm grinding in preparation. I'm using my "B squad" members that I didn't use throughout the game, trying to get them up to the 70s where my main party is.
anyone have any good recs for cheapish ($20 or less) digital JRPGs on the Switch? Something mindless and/or generic, don't really care.
I've read pretty good things about Earthlock, it's a JRPG in the late 90's playstation era visual style. I haven't played it personally, it's also on sale for exactly 20 dollars this week.
i think starting Octopath and DQXI at the same time is the worst thing i could’ve done to Octopath haha. it’s good but drastically less engaging
You are insane. Love both but obviously DQ XI I loved much more. Keep us updated, the DQ story gets so fucking good about a third into the game
i think you may have misunderstood me haha, i am liking DQ wayyyy more. unless you’re saying i’m crazy for playing two dense jrpgs at once which is valid
Yeah you are insane to start both at the same time. Although, I've pulled shit like that plenty before. Just not with that combo.
I think if I made a list of all of the unfinished JRPGs I've played it would be the most depressing list ever
this particular combo works out because i play Octo when gf wants the TV and DQ when she doesn’t so im kinda forced to give ‘em both fair shots
Got a switch for the holidays and am playing Octopath Traveler. Cyrus' scrutinize animation is hilarious.
Octopath is a game that does so much right except for the absolutely bonkers level recommendation between chapters. It destroys any plot pace of the game for me and I spent so many hours grinding just between chapters 1 and 2 that it burnt me out on the game. I'll pick it up again at some point as I love basically everything else about it, but it's gonna sit on the shelf for the time being. As of now, I'm FINALLY playing KH: Birth By Sleep. Went through a few recap videos for KH 1+2, Chain of Memories, and 358/2 to get caught up and now I'm trying to blaze through this and Dream Drop Distance before KH3 releases. I forgot how much I love these games.
if you’re a completionist, the first. if you’re not, watch cutscene comps and story summaries for everything prior to II. i beat the PS4 remaster of the first game earlier this year and while i’m glad if it’s off my game bucket list, it was a real slog and i’m never gonna do it again. it was fun but by the end i couldn’t wait for it to be over. Re: Chain of Memories is just awfully unfun imo, got two hours in and then said fuck it and watched a 4 hour YouTube movie on it instead lol. from II on it’s smooth sailing, but don’t go out of your way to play 358/2
I agree with all of this. I loved KH1, but don't feel like the side games were worthwhile until BBS, at least as far as I am in it right now. Feels like a solid game with a good expansion of the lore. If I were you I'd at least play KH1 and 2 if you have interest.
I modded my SNES mini and I'm in the mood to play through an old school JRPG. These are my choices, as far as games I added to the system. Vote for one: Breath of Fire 2 - played a few times on the GBA port, never finished Chrono Trigger - made it to the final boss and died, never went back FF Mystic Quest - never played FF 2(4) - completed at least 3 times FF 3(6) - completed once FF 5 - completed twice Illusion of Gaia - played for like 5 seconds as a kid Lufia 1 - never played Lufia 2 - completed once Ogre Battle - have tried like 3 times, such a hard game. OB64 is my all-time fav game so I want to finish this one someday Tales of Phantasia - played the GBA port, never finished it And out of the games already on the system: Link to the Past - I think I got to the 4th dungeon? Never finished it Super Mario RPG - have played a few times, never finished it Secret of Mana - currently have a file on there, unfinished Earthbound - also have an unfinished file on there As you can see, I'm pretty bad at finishing games. I need help.
Are Ogre Battle 64 and Quest 64 objectively good games? I don't remember ever seeing them mentioned until a year or two ago and then suddenly a bunch of people started getting behind them as cult classics. I'm wondering if this is due to them being among the few RPGs on N64 or if they are really good games in their own right. I never played either one but I might have to consider picking them up.
