I have to second this, it's very weird to hear the Weeknd singing in an episode while seeing him playing a character that isn't the Weeknd at the same time, definitely takes me out of it
I know that there are plenty of musicians turned actors who are legitimately good actors, but none of them are in this show
Seems like the people that are least satisfied with this were either expecting this to be the next big "prestige" drama for HBO or already had hate for the writer(s) before it even aired.
The Mike Dean intro was hilariously cringy. But I did like the scene with Suzanna Son and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Son is a ridiculously talented singer and actress.
Caught some of this in a hotel the other night. I was delighted to see Rachel Sennott, but man, The Weeknd was absolutely awful from the little I could bring myself to watch. It would have been hard to take a more seasoned actor seriously delivering those lines, but oof. I have no interest in seeing any more of this.
remove all the weird/problematic shit in the show, it's just boring. I find myself actively not paying attention because nothing of value is happening. The cast is too big for any meaningful character development and I feel like Levinson just added shit in for shock value (which isn't really a surprise with him).
Can’t recall a show in recent memory with more baggage/controversy, awful critical and fan reviews and just an all-around disastrous roll-out and execution. Good riddance.
Are there any legit defenders of this show? Like I'll accept "Hey, this is trashy and bad but I don't mind watching the train-wreck" but are there people out there who believe this is prestige TV telling an important story about the music industry?
Like any show, there's fan accounts and "stans" but even the Weeknd's Instagram comments are full of people disliking it
I've only seen up to episode 3 but I love it so far. I think it's interesting and funny. Lily is fantastic and I don't seem to mind The Weeknds acting nearly as much as most people do. He plays an insecure creep pretty well.
Yeah I really don't see that at all honestly. I seem to be one of the few out there that don't think he's awful haha. He absolutely fits the vibe of that character to me.
Idk I've seen people act exactly like that in real life. It's like someone pretending to be tough when they're actually just pathetic and insecure, that fits the character to me and just works. That whole scene was very funny to me lol.
The most interesting stuff I think the industry stuff. Like, Jenny’s character kind of being weaponized against Lily Rose-Depp’s character. Even Troye Sivan said in the post-show package that that’s interesting because it’s something that happens in the industry, with her basically stealing a song. It’s absolutely insane that that’s what they’re just now getting to in the penultimate episode, when they teed that up in the premiere. I’d like to blame Levinson, but I think a lot of this it’s Abel’s fault and was a massive ego trip for him.
