it sounds like an older person asked a young kid what they would do if someone hurt their friends feelings, and the kid describes what he would do to protect their friend from a bully. Theres a few times in the album where Christian references trying to protect his friend that committed suicide and feeling guilty about not protecting them from their biggest threat: themselves.
There's also "we're all alone/ grab a hold/ well i said to not/ what the fuck do I know" which is my favorite part of Intro
This has always been one of my favorite things about Home. I love when it comes full-circle like that. I distinctly remember writing about this very thing in my review for the album back when it came out. Also, I caught the "Your Deep Rest" name thing pretty early on cause I worked for my college radio station and I speak fast, so I said it on air and caught myself.
A bit off topic, sorry! My boyfriend is coming with me to one of their UK shows but has never heard any of their stuff before & doesn't listen to that much stuff in this scene - he's more into Gaslight, Frank Turner & such. Which songs would you say are the most accessible to play for someone for the first time? It took me quite a few listens to properly click with Home and I don't know whether it makes as much sense out of context. What would be interesting to discuss is whether or not you view the Hotelier as an easily "accessible" band as such, or do you that it takes work to properly appreciate them?
Amazed by the 45 page thread for this album! It goes without saying here but this band really deserves more hype especially in the UK - going to both Southampton and London to see them and hope it's as good as last year. Soft Animal is phenomenal and if the rest of the album is as good it will be one of my favourites ever, along side Home, cannot wait for the 27th! Thrice, PUP and Architects too, ridiculous day for releases
The song has taken over my life, only the new Thrice gives me a reprieve, kind of worried about over listening to it to be honest haha
It's only like my 4th favorite song on the record too! That could change when I finally get it though and listen straight through.
I already forget how to do this to me two deliverences and sun are just complete monsters of songs. They encompass everything I want in songs.. Also I just have a special connection to settle the scar.. Also opening mail for my grandmother blew me away.
"Two Deliverances" and "Settle the Scar" were my favourites before I read the lyrics for "Soft Animal", very excited to dig into those more. "Sun" is one of my least favourites, I don't think the first half of the song is that good and the kind of minute and a half bridge where they just kind of do nothing feels pointless to me. The ending to that song is one of my favourite parts of the album though. "Opening Mail" is another one of my favourites, I think the section from "Two Deliverances" to "Soft Animal" is easily the best part of the album.
I love the space of sun.. Creates a cool soundscape in that bridge. Also I just feel that the song kind of grooves ha, but I could see your reservations about it. Yea that run is insane. You in this light and end of reel are def... Interesting? Ha I really like them but they don't sound like anything else in the genre, which I think is pretty cool.
Yeah I like them both although I think they both end a bit poorly. I'm really excited to spend some more time with the full album and the lyrics so I can get some real thoughts on these songs.
You cannot get me more excited for the album than by saying that! Cannot wait to hear Sun for the first time live in Southampton from what I've been reading as it seems to be the peak of the album.
Thanks for the suggestion! I did think this but I wasn't sure if it really represents what the Hotelier is nowadays, but it is accessible. Does anyone who's heard Goodness think it'll be easier to engage with for casual listeners? I definitely think certain songs are - Two Deliverances is probably the catchiest song they've written and I can't get over how good End of Reel is (as well as the rest of the album!)
On Apple Music, Goodness pt 1 is listed as a single, but only part 2 is listed as being on the album. Am i missing something?
