Well if their tweet is still accurate they should have already started recording unless something changed. If they were planning to record I’m assuming they already had some new material.
FWIW it's been a while, but when I saw them last year, Christian said they'd be recording at some point in 2019 and that they had some material written.
I do believe there was that intention at some point... not sure if it’s still there but hope I’m wrong!!
last thing, I'd rather have a hotelier album in 3-4 years where they are inspired and excited to write than an album now that they make bc they feel like they have to make one. If that makes any sense. If we never get another album from them, I'll always be sad but satisfied with two near perfect records and one real solid one.
This has been posted countless times I'm sure, but goddamn is this good. I love a good acoustic performance, especially when they maintain the energy of the original songs
I'd rather have any new music from them this year, would be great! Doubt they'll tour my country anyways.
The music industry is super saturated right now. When downloading became a thing, it hurt big artists and bands, but it gave fans access to indie bands that were hard to find and looking for a break. In a way, I think it challenged artists to make better/more exciting music more frequently to stand out. On the flip side, it hurt a lot of great bands and they had to fold because the money wasn’t there to support being a band. I don’t know what the solution is. I just don’t want to lose more good bands, like The Hotelier. It’s amazing that after almost 20 years there hasn’t been a system figured out that works for bands/fans/labels financially.
When I think of the thousands I spent towards the industry every year I say to myself how can this not be working... but then I realize most people I know in real life just aren’t interested in spending money on anything music related at all
I do a combination of things. Go to shows, buy some merchandise, buy some albums, have a streaming service, buy a records digitally, sometimes physically, but still download and stream stuff too. I like the direct buying. I bought The Republic Of Wolves album digitally right from the band. At shows, merch purchases are cash in hand for a band or artist (when Kevin Devine did his solo acoustic tour he was his own merch guy).
I wish I had the time/patience/energy to write all my thoughts on this topic, I could probably write an essay if I did. Instead, I’ll just link you a Phoebe Bridgers tweet that does a good job of at least scratching the surface of the issue in a concise way.
A big problem is that Spotify/Apple Music don't put the money back into the industry like Netflix do imo
Netflix spending to create content is crazy, but it’s key to their survival and attracting new subscribers. I really respect them taking the leap to do this instead of just continuing to buy and sell you on old content. You’re absolutely right. If music streaming services worked with bands, even if it was creating a lot of live albums, covers, whatever, that would pay the bands and give them original stuff to draw subscribers. Maybe it’s been tried. I just think there is truth in the post above.
I pirated an absolute fuckton of music as a teen and through college but I'm doing my best to remedy that. So much so, that it's actually getting a little ridiculous. I've got around 200 records since last year. Taking a break right now as the credit card is looking rough. lol
3-4 years would be a painfully long wait time, but I do believe we'll get another record at some point. I wonder what made them decide to step away
