yeah, this is a good way to sum up what i was trying to say. i've had friends not pay much attention to Goodness even though they made a big fuss about how Home was so much deeper and more emotionally devastating than anything they had ever heard.

i don't think Goodness is a demanding listen, at least by my standards, but imo there's nothing as immediately rewarding on this album as "In Framing" or "Your Deep Rest" or "Life in Drag", which were favorites with said friends. there's a lot to those songs, but the fast tempos and guitar riffs and the overall emo-punk feel jump off right away and manage to capture a non-avid listener's attention with ease.

after that, they'd pay more attention to the lyrics, the overarching themes of being abused and broken and angry and hopeless would become clearer - because the lyricism on this thing is amazing -, and they'd finally "get" that those were special songs on a special album by a special band. that's just what i'm pretty sure happened with people i know, but it's also my interpretation of how it happened with most people.

on the other hand, i can see the same non-avid listeners/fans of the catchier, heavier songs on Home getting bored/weirded out at the poem, at the long intro to "Goodness pt 2", at the two-minute one-note bridge on "Sun" or even at the cover art with the naked people (remember how that was its own thing?), which in turn would make them dismiss the record more easily.

all in all, i think it's easy to get what this album is about on a surface level, but it takes a few listens to pick up on all the details and to really let the mood settle on you. i'm not saying everyone who didn't like it didn't "get" it, but much like the last Turnover record (not making any objective comparison here), i think there were a lot of people expecting something that they didn't receive and dismissing it because it wasn't what they were expecting, without really giving it a fair chance.

They did say it was a confession. It seems as if they know it’s blasphemous and is looking to absolve their sin and find redemption in the light that is Goodness.

Tbh I feel like it’s a weird comparison. They’re two pretty different albums. But I would definitely suggest Schmaltz to anyone in this thread; it’s my favorite of the year so far

I’ve got summer break soon! (Remember when I said the same of winter break and didn’t manage it!?)

But for real, I’ll have 10 weeks of just me and the kids with the occasional prep for the new school year, so I’ll be able to enjoy some cinema.

A Quiet Place was a good one. The dates that I’ve watched things had blurred together so I can’t remember if it was “this year” or just before 2018 that I viewed them, but I’ve watched and enjoyed quite a few newies and oldies. I saw Her, Call Me By Your Name, Shape of Water, Lincoln, The Big Sick, Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, American Movie, Lincoln, A Ghost Story, A Quiet Place, Arrival, Bleed For This, Lady Bird, It Comes at Night, Black Panther, Hell or High Water, Gone Baby Gone, Hidden Figures, Get Out and Sunset Blvd. These are the ones that are in my recent viewing list that I try to update as much as possible.

Seeing this list in its entirety, I’m ashamed I didn’t try and fit a Cassavetes film in...
