there are frequently Weakerthans comparisons. Haven't listened to that band myself so i couldn't corroborate.
Christian is at least very into them so that's probably it. I only hear it on some songs bc I've only listened to the first two weakerthans albums but I hear it most on housebroken (unfortunate)
Both bands have sort of a rootsy-rock feel to them, but I hear it more in the storytelling ability. They both know how to tell me about things I shouldn't care about, but I do.
What tour? Joyce manor has been done for a while and thought they were done until the Thursday/nye shows
Not sure what the tour is specifically, but they're playing in Rochester, only local bands as openers according to the venues site
so my #1 listened on Spotify song this year (disregarding ambient/drone stuff) was Piano Player sounds about fucking right
legit did a double take when i listened to left and leaving for the first time as a result of how spot on it is
yeah, and there's no way that no one in the band noticed, especially Christian, so guess he thought the rest of the song outweighed the first 15 seconds reminds me of when i tried to write a song once and accidentally "came up with" / learned the intro riff to the middle by Jimmy Eat World and wondered if this is how the big legal dispute part of my wiki page is gonna start out
The first few seconds is the only part that sounds similar to me - the kind picky / strummy thing. The vocal melodies don't hold much resemblance at all to me, nor does really anything else *shrugs*
feel like the pretty similar phrasing of the notes for that first fifteen seconds is enough to kind of keep it going in your head, plus the way the guitars come in after that little intro is also p similar to me. I think everyone's kind of accidentally used a song they loved as a jumping off point at some time or another so i don't think it's a big deal besides that housebroken is the weakest song on there and all (no shade at John K or anything)
I've unintentionally aped other people's songs before when writing my own. I can typically detect it pretty early on in the process but I've gotten as far as writing lyrics before realizing anything. Always a bummer when that happens.
yeah thats the worst when you go a while without realizing youve done it. however, there are times where ill deliberately write parts that are obviously inspired by a band i listen to. i always go through the added effort of trying to make it my own as best as possible.
Scored a last minute spot to the PUP show they're opening tomorrow. Only really going to see them. I saw them in May just after the album was streamed so I'm really excited to see them again now that I'm more familiar with Goodness.
so stoked for this show. Hopefully they gain a ton of fans from this, they'll be playing to like 2,000+ people these next two days.
Yeah, it's gonna be tight. Kinda stoked to see PUP too. They're amazing live, even though I'm not big on their new album. Hope this does well for The Hotelier, since I'm pretty sure they've been playing the same venue in Toronto the last 3 times they've come, so the boost would do them well.
Rochester last night: Piano Player N 43° 33' 55.676 W 72 45' 11.914" Two Deliverances In Framing Your Deep Rest Among The Wildflowers An Ode To The Nite Ratz Club Weathered Soft Animal Sun An Introduction To The Album The Scope Of All This Dendron("this is going to be our encore, there is no place for us to walk off of the stage, so just pretend. This is our last song but if you shoutout your favorite Spongebob quotes after it's done maybe we'll play another) Opening Mail For My Grandmother Show was amazing, crowd was great. This was my first time seeing them headline. I had seen them open for The World Is... a couple of years ago. Christian builds great rapport with the audience and they all had fun on stage. My friend and I both agreed we think "Sun" will be their live staple going forward.
