To keep things slightly more relevant to the thread, what is your favorite song on Goodness, and if you can, why is it your favorite? (If you've done this recently and I'm just drawing a blank on it my apologies).

This is pretty much my issue as well. Once you're in my circle, I don't want to let go, but getting people into my circle initially is a feat.

 

Cerulean is a good answer. In fact, I might have to change my answer now. We're going to be best friends, I can tell.

End of Reel; when the album came out my ex girlfriend had just broken up with me and the school year was ending and I had no idea where I was gonna go and felt stuck. The first chorus - "in the night we celebrate..." - always reminds me of graduation day. It was just a nice reminder to me that however I felt then I didn't have to feel forever. How about you?

 

I'm listening now for the first time in a few months. Album is still good. works better with this weather.

 

Well I'm inclined to say End Of Reel as well, but I think I'd actually prefer to discuss Soft Animal. Soft Animal is a perfect example, to me, of how this record balances the good and the bad, or the hope and defeat of life. I think most people would agree that the song is talking about Christian's grandma (seeing as how it comes after Opening Mail in the track listing - or after the interlude that separates them) and I interpret it as the struggle to find meaning and purpose after the loss of someone so important in your life. My mom passed away when I was extremely young, and as I've gotten older I've struggled with reconciling my belief in the good in the world with the harsh reality of living in a cruel, dangerous universe where good people die and bad people thrive. I see the deer as my mother, but also as a metaphor for the struggle to find meaning I feel like I'm perpetually mired in. I'm always searching for something to qualify my existence, and lines like "make me believe that there's a God sometimes" have the sort of desperate desire in them that I'm so familiar with.

That's a long-winded answer, but yeah, the themes of loss, meaninglessness, and the desire to find good resonate deeply with me.
