i mean for life in drag, the transition works, but it's the one sort of post-hardcore/screamo track on that record. i can see why people wouldn't like it. i didn't like it the first time i heard it, lol
My gf and I get in arguments over it (she hates it, I love it) whenever we listen to the record she wants to skip it.. I'm just like no. You can't skip songs on his record you just... Sigh I always lose
Also of note: I'm pretty sure (it's been a bit since I've spun it) the vinyl of Home has the Wildflowers interlude as the beginning of Side B in front of Life In Drag - if my memory serves me correctly. Works really well that way.
I love all of it, but it's certainly the writing that makes me love it the most. I would kill to be able to write a song that tells a story like that. I like Sun, but it's not in my top three for the record. I would cut a good minute and a half off of it, and the repetition of the word Sun itself realllyyyy annoyed me on my initial listens.
I listened to home into goodness again yesterday they just work so incredibly well together. Goodness really feels like you are leaving the darkness and memories of the house in home and walking out into the world and experience all of this acceptance, love, and community. Probably intentionally made to feel that way
has the band ever said anything about all their work being connected? or have people just been sort of forcibly doing that?
It still really annoys me. It happens way too much. The ending is decent but still, the shouting of "sun! sun! sun!" going into it is just grating. Same feeling toward all the "sustain" repetition. Two songs I'd never miss.
sun is a very excellent build up wish they did more weird stuff like that and the dissonant part in pt 2
sun is ok and not even a bit weird - the problem with it is that the build up is too uninteresting to justifiy it being that long - the repetition doesn't bother me at all
I guess I am forcibly doing that. All they said is that it was a logical progression from the last record.
I first heard Sun live and blown away by the build up. Maybe thats why I like it more than most people, I also felt like the studio version did the live version a ton of justice
I love the pop-ish opening riff - I think they might have consciously tried to move away from an obvious structure trying to make the song more "interesting" to contrast the initial pop leanings - I'm fine with the idea, I just think the buildup is too uninteresting to justify it being that long...
I used to dislike sun but the end of that song is probably the best part of the album so IMO it's totally justified
As a musician they do some cool stuff in that buildup. Mainly they emphasize the Lydian sound often associated with light and sun in classical music. This probably was done on accident but it's cool. The chord is a c chord but they emphasize the sharp 4 of the chord which is an f sharp. It's a pretty cool sound and one of the many reasons I enjoy the build up, the ambient sounds resonate on the f sharp and to me creates a really cool atmosphere. Then the band kicks in and they sound great lol
intro, in framing discomfort, dendron, scope your deep rest, housebroken among the wildflowers, life in drag
On both Home and Goodness every song in their respective album is at such equal playing field for me, with the expection of a few tracks that are just a tad higher in my eyes because of personal relevance. Both albums have 1 song I could do with out though. Housebroken and Fear Of Good
