Thinking of going out for a walk sometime today to give this a listen and leave my phone inside so that it's just the outdoor surroundings and myself. I always find myself getting distracted by my phone whenever I listen to this so I'm excited to leave it behind.
It's an amazing album to listen to under the morning sun. Also I'm checking out some of the older stuff on It Never Goes Out, never really gave it too much of a chance. What a progression they've made. Who is the singer on Lonely Hearts Club?
Welp, complete downpour in my area right now so it doesn't look like I'm going out for a stroll with this after all :(
Spent this weekend at a writer's festival in an upstate NY lake town that I attended for school, so I took some time out of my Saturday and listened to this thing front to back laying down in the grass, eyes closed by the lake under a tree. It was definitely the best experience I've had with the album so far, but I think it also made me more critical of its flaws. I think I'm 100% on board with interlude 2 through Soft Animal, but I just really can't get behind how this thing opens with the poem and Goodness pt. 2. It feels completely at odds with the rest of the album--I think this thing is about 150% more cohesive with Pt. 1 in place of the poem and Pt. 2, musically and lyrically. I've grown used to those snare hits and the clash-y intro of Goodness Pt 2, but they just take me out of the song entirely. Also agree that the guitar solo isn't really earned. Also, I think Soft Animal is by far the most captivating song on here and everything after that really fails to hold my attention. Some good stuff, but Soft Animal just feels like an ending to me. Sun is probably my least favorite; the buildup is nice but it's repetitive to a fault and doesn't really feel like it goes anywhere after that first listen. You In This Light is a little grating to me, and I don't like End Of Reel as much as others in here. Fear Of Good is great but I rarely feel the need to skip to it. I'd also really like a version of Settle The Scar without the distorted drum hits in the bridge. Loved them at first, but now I just want to hear the actual song without the effects. Lot of decisions like that where I feel they thought more about "first listens" instead of longevity. Still, that middle section with Two Deliverances, Settle The Scar, Opening Mail, and Soft Animal is amazing. Feel like this may end up being top 10 of the year for me, even if I really dislike a significant portion of it.
This is a great post. I largely disagree with you on some aspects. But I love that you took the time to actually say what you didn't like about it. I feel like this will be a record where I'll binge on it for weeks/months go away from it. Come back to it and realize why I loved it ha. I do feel like some of those effects may have been to surprise the listener on first time listens but I've grown to expect and love those parts. Especially the bridge to settle the scar.
Seems like a good time to mention that I love how not-hostile Chorus is in comparison to AP.net threads that basically turned into fights over whether Housebroken was good. Differing opinions and well-constructed thoughts on music are awesome. I love this thread.
I feel like listening to home and goodness back to back would be a great listen. Goodness would be a release to all of homes tension. Still haven't done it yet either
I absolutely love You In This Light, I still get such JEW Clarity vibes from it. I couple people have said they don't think the guitar solo in Goodness Pt2 isn't "earned". I think I may know what you all mean (although I disagree), but can someone clarify / expound on that?
Totally, but I like the other changes a lot. New bridge is great, "lost my stable hand" lyric, etc. New version is better save for that one thing that just annoys me a little. Not even a big deal haha.
anyone tried starting the album with poem > goodness 1 > goodness 2? i can't do it right now but it sounds good in my head. will give it a go later
tried that but it didn't sound right, the poem killed the buildup from 1 to 2. i like the idea of building up from spoken word > acoustic > electric
You in this light feels like a thing I can't remember. Clutching you close your body felt like December shook awake early from the rocks of your tremors. Tracing my thumb over the miles of your memory. Now a bit brighter with a smile and a laughter. One in the same and what am I to be after, dancing in private with the concept of never? You in this light feels like a thing I can't remember. So great.
Did anyone else get a shipping notification from Tiny Engines? I'm stoked to receive my Fawn & Field vinyl along with Goodness Pt. 1
I've been listening to it this way and I really like it. The spoken word, to me, really sets the mood for the record and gives me nearly a minute to prepare for what I'm about to listen to.
