Still dunno if this is better than the new Radiohead but as if End of Reel isn't the best closing song of all time
this record is fucking cathartic. this is probably a very 'duh' statement with an obvious answer that i'm not aware of, but i wish big publications and papers gave bands from this scene more attention and reviewed their albums. i don't understand why that Beach Slang record has 20+ reviews on metacritic and made a number of EOTY lists while this and Pinegrove - both easily boasting superior songwriting and creativity - get less than half of that amount and will probably be limited to scene-related lists, other than maybe Spin and Pitchfork.
I think there is just way too much music coming out now for publications to cover these smaller bands. It won't draw people outside this little community in, so whats the point? I agree with you, wish it was covered more but I get it.
fair reason. i kept trying to find other examples but i think it all really comes down to the label's size and how much it pushes the album. TWIABP is on Epitaph, but they're definitely a low profile act on there. that's really sad, though. i still think a lot of this has to do with the preconceived notions that people have on scene labels. RFC already has a bigger internet presence than Polyvinyl, for instance, so it's possible that the guys at NY Times or The Guardian heard about Cardinal and just brushed it off without a second thought.
yeah, they've actually been reviewed by The Guardian haha. but they're like the biggest act on RFC, right? definitely the one getting the most push there. i think Cardinal is a better and more important record than anything MoBo has done, even if i like Holy Ghost, so hopefully Jeff is smart enough to give Pinegrove's next release a ton of support.
ooooooooooooof i don't even like the band much (i think the new record is far and away their best) but i think that record is pretty bad. nostalgically can jam to "hours outside in the snow" though
I think the first half of Holy Ghost is great - but yeah, I think Sports might be my favorite still. Though Pothole is a great song.
My only problem with Modern Baseball is that the Atlanta Braves are having like the worst season ever.. Wait.... *ba-dum-tsshh*
Sports varies from quite good to very bad. The opener is fantastic, but there are several filler songs on the record, or songs that just needed a strong producer to tell them "No, that bit will ruin this song, keep it simpler." You're Gonna Miss It All is absolutely fantastic. Like, not a single song is one I would skip. Even the weaker songs are strong, and tracks like The Old Gospel Choir, Pothole and of course Your Graduation are their best, still. The EP was great too, and wildly varied. The last track is one of the best things they have ever done. The ending to that track gives me all sorts of emotions. Holy Ghost is very good but a bit of a disappointment. Both halves are good but flawed. The first half has a few filler songs imo, and little stand out other than Wedding Singer. The second half is too quick and the songs should have had a little more room to breathe in places because they don't always grab the attention in the short timespan. My thoughts.
Modern Baseball are the kind of band where I enjoy 25% of their music, will never revisit the other 75%, but will always pay to see them live because they're a blast... and more importantly, are human beings that I really respect. Most of that 25% I enjoy comes from The Perfect Cast and Holy Ghost, and I'm excited to see what they put out next.
this became a Modern Baseball thread for a little while and i'm not okay with that i'm glad i've seen more people in support of the intro. i really like it more than most did initially. i'm just a fan of spoken word poetry
