transition from METN to SM actually feels like a decent comparison for Home to this. the first is all raw, dark intensity. the second is more spacious, more spiritual, sweeter.
I don't mean that as mean I just saw it mentioned and I have particularly strong feelings of dislike for that record
But "Apprehension" tho....Great song. I haven't even come close to touching that album in like 3-4 years though, so.....
I like Cope and Simple Math the song a lot? I was also late to the party on MO and Cope was the first album of theirs I got into, then I worked my way back.
This is a hell of a set. Spoiler obviously if you don't wanna know. The Hotelier Setlist at The Garage, Burnsville
On Goodness, The Hotelier gets lost in the wilderness and comes out the other side I liked this review
I think some reviewers may be intimidated by the depth of the themes in the lyrics.. Do you feel that having the lyrics first helped shape the narrative when trying to piece together the cohesiveness of the record? I could see just reading the lyrics as a work of art separate from the album helping piece together the themes that they are touching on. In still forming my own opinions/understanding of the themes and letting them sink in. I've had it for a week so it may take some time.
I wrote some words about this album and how I interpret the theme and message. Would love if you guys would read and discuss with me! Like I say numerous times, I'm not sure how firm a grasp I have on Holden's poetry here. There's a lot to dissect. It was really cool to sit down and delve deeper into the themes though. Until this morning, I really hadn't had much opportunity to listen while reading along with the lyrics. Closer to the Truth and Further From the Sky: "Will you disrupt this pattern from starting again?" How The Hotelier learn to take life's punches on "Goodness"
That was awesome! I like what you said about "Opening Mail...", I lost my Grandpa to Alzheimer's this year so the song has hit me pretty hard too. Also, I really enjoyed your take on the story. From what I was reading, you kind of see the album like a story arc that's about coming to terms with a breakup (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm currently in the camp of seeing a cohesive story throughout the album, and I really like looking at it as coming to terms with someone who you used to love leaving, but you both are at peace with it. At the end of the day though, I don't know if any of us will truly have a firm grasp on this album ever haha I think that's what makes it really special, but also very frustrating.
Simple Math is great. Not as good as METN but very good still. Also, finally listening to this. Enjoying it for sure, but I'm really not sure it will grow to match Home for me
I really enjoy reading other people's thoughts on this album. I hope to have something written up soon also
I was showing a friend this last night (I've honestly been talking about this album to anyone who will listen to me for the past week), and he called it a mix between Foo Fighters and a boy band, and it kinda made me cringe lol
