Settle the Scar Opening Mail Soft Animal I think that's my top 3. Two Deliverances might swap in for something at some point.
The opening line of Opening Mail crushes me. Reminds me of my great grandma before she passed and gets me choked up remembering those last visits where she didn't know who I was.
Not understanding the people saying they don't like the opening section of this record, feel like it starts off really strong. Sure I kinda wish it didn't open with a spoken word bit, but after that it's all great.
So after reading that album premiere article it seems like Christian might be somewhat difficult to work with. I mean the line up changes and then the one guy being bothered by the spoken word. (all based on the writing of the article)
i think it's more likely that Christian's tastes and style might differ a great deal from the other members.
The back half of End of Reel may be one of my favorite musical stretches in any song, ever. It's that good.
Two deliverances may be my favorite song of all time... I just get chills every time not sure if that's ever happened with one particular song..
It's definitely my favourite at the moment, when the last chorus comes in it's so epic, very much like something off Home like Introduction. However that's probably my only criticism that it (and Settle the Scar for obvious reasons) seems from a previous era compared to some of the songs. Not really a criticism as I love those songs but maybe we're just liking them a lot now because they're more familiar than the other stuff that will only get better in time? Who knows.
Listened to it just twice so far, and I'm not disappointed, really enjoyed some weird mixing choices, things being recorded like somebody would be walking around through a field with a tape-recorder in hands, just humming or leaving traces for sounds to be remembered. I'll be getting into it more later on.
I feel like two deliverances definitely belongs on this record, but I agree settle the scar is a little bit more of their sound from the last record but I feel like the mixing choices they made help make it fit in here better
Thrice has always been more of a group band...there are many groups in which the frontperson does all the press and publicity for a record. it means nothing, different bands work different ways i don't know how this became a thing. just squash it, this rumoring is stupid
Lol I doubt anyone is seriously trying to speculate on their future... But when we get a pretty in depth interview where the other band members actively criticise a decision on the album and are unhappy with it (the spoken word part in this case), someone can definitely discuss the balance of influence/power amongst the members
Lol I'm trying to write a history essay at the same time But why is discussing the degree of influence of the different members on the songwriting process taboo?
there was a deleted post that basically said that he doesn't think that they're going to last in this current form. why assume things? maybe they're perfectly happy, you don't know what's going on. there was an interview which can be put in any such direction. i don't think this is something worth discussing
Yea I made a post.. I was reading a thrice interview from Riley and made me think about how we don't get a lot of content from this band outside of Christian. It was a stupid thing to post. My bad
Think you're misinterpreting what I'm getting at, I'm not trying to assume or infer that there is some sort of tension within the band, when I spoke to them in person they all seemed really happy about the album and the show. But there was an interview where one of the members criticised the spoken word intro, that just kind of stuck out at me, maybe he lost based on majority decision of 2 vs 1 in the band, but it's just something I noted. Your thing about who discussing who is more influential in songwriting though is kind of shocking. The first example that comes to mind is like System of a Down, can I never comment on how Daron Malakian took more of a stance in songwriting in Hypnotise/Mezmerise and how this is a good/bad thing because "it's like discussing someone's marriage. it's weird and frankly none of our business"? Isn't that like quite a big part in talking and evaluating music?
yeah, i think this leads into the whole "fan entitlement" thing i've been going on a lot lately. i think us as fans can expect way too much and don't ever think of giving a band any privacy when it comes to what they're doing. discussing songwriting dynamics is fine, but once you get into discussing whether a member is going to stay or internal tension, that's when a line gets crossed
Never have I read about a situation where every band member is 100% happy with every aspect of a record. Compromises happen when you work in a group
