This album is just so incredible. When I'm listening to it, I'm thinking about playing it again as soon as it's done. When I'm not listening to it, all I've been thinking is how I want to be listening to it. The album is a real gem, the should-be new standard to which all indie and alternative music could be compared to. There's just so much going on in the album that I've literally never heard from rock music, all executed brilliantly. It's just so crazy to me that they were able to write such a sad, heart wrenching album in Home, an album that was extremely personal to me, then come up with Goodness. A positive record about overcoming those hurdles and finding peace. It's just amazing to me because both albums are just such polar opposites in mood, yet are brilliant. I guess what I'm trying to say is that once bands find a mood they can write in / with - they stick to it. When they venture off usually the outlier album isn't as good. The Hotelier have proven that they can write extraordinary songs around any mood, feeling etc. and I think that's one thing that makes this album truly outstanding.
I'm really glad that I have a pretty good amounts of friends that are into some of the same stuff I am. If they're not, we're respectful of each others' tastes for the most part haha. I guess it's because music was probably the main reason for a lot of my friendships.
Tried to go for a run went for a walk and listened to this in its entirety again. End of Reel really is a 'drop the mic, end your career, retire and go down in legend' song, like it's such a complete finale to everything they've ever done and part of me hopes they never make any more music
I mean people probably said that after OK Computer lol It not being evident where a band can go next with their sound doesn't mean they should stop or will stop or whatever. I feel like I've read that kind of thing a lot lately and I do not get it, that's so exciting to me. Like I'm not excited for a new Bayside album because I'm 90% sure I know exactly where they're gonna go with it.
Most of my friends are stuck being into "third wave emo" so they like brand new, tbs, fall out boy, ect but they won't give any "new" bands a try
95% of the fun of a band releasing another album is not knowing what direction they are going to go and how it's going to sound. The other 5% is when it blows your mind.
Radiohead was a lot different; the last three Hotelier albums feel as if they're one connected arc, and Goodness feels like the end of said arc. But yeah you're right, I'm excited to see what they do next as it'll probably be great, I just hope they don't do a Say Anything/Megadeth/[Insert band that has overstayed its welcome here] and run it into the ground or ruin the legacy as they've created a mythos around the band right now and would be a shame to break that.
I could say the same for Pablo, The Bends and OK Computer. Definitely a progression from each album but not worlds away. I'd be very interested if The Hotelier made a Kid A style leap next, haha.
Yeah that's true, I meant more a narrative/thematic arc, but I agree think a Kid A type leap would be the thing they'd do next! But tbh who cares what they do in the next few years when you can just listen to this on repeat lol
I'm 22, but most of my older friends are / were into that "third wave" and refuse to check out the scene's newer bands and I just do not understand why. Very frustrating because while the amount of good bands isn't as prolific in volume, the newer bands that are good and really fucking good.
The progression of this trilogy of albums reminds me a lot of the way the Wonder Years trilogy went. Kinda similar in themes, The Hotelier just did it a lot better lol they replaced The Wonder Years as my favorite band.
Let's be clear I was not comparing this album to OK Computer lol. Just a way of working through that line of thinking
I did the exact same thing! First listen was on the way to an EITS concert and I was just grinning stupidly and looking over at my wife for the entire back half of End of Reel.
Just going back to the other conversation for a sec, I love this band a lot but if anyone ever played it during a party they would lose their auxiliary cord privileges for good.
.....Yeah, they can easily go back down the darker path of "Home". Christian said they pushed away from that intentionally on this release, but intend on returning at some point.
He said he intended on going back on it? Kinda contradicts the whole "you can't live in anguish forever" thing and most of the last interview he gave......
Yeah, I thought the same thing. I think that recent quote is more just promoting the album. Cause he's def talked about starting to create a darker album, but then rebelled against that....because he didnt want the band to only be known as that. So before creating another dark record, they wanted to create something else. You know how art goes though, maybe next album will be some random style thing, who knows haha.
