Also I want to hear more about that Braid movie, that’s been one of the more intriguing trailers in a good while

The Invitation did not work for me at all and almost everything works for me

I wanna rewatch it in hopes that I can either enjoy it or remember enough of it to give a valid critique

I really loved the Invitation but every other person who I’ve discussed it with is either in love with it or pretty whatever about it.

The Invitation is so beautifully directed it makes me cry. You know when you watch a movie and you're just like, "Man, I am so excited to be watching this movie and seeing where it goes?" The Invitation was one of those for me. Gosh darn, I just had such an exhilarating time living with that movie for an hour and forty minutes

I had a photo taken with the director at a screening in STL (where she’s from) but I lost it sadly

Didn’t realize award season was on. I’m pretty amazed Toni Collette didn’t get recognized for Hereditary.

I’m surprised. What didn’t you like about it? Imo it’s the best meta horror since Scream.

To me, it felt like its creators thought the concept was so clever that they didn’t have to make it scary or funny. I don’t know what I was supposed to take from its deconstruction of horror tropes, as if pointing out that characters in horror movies do stupid, counter-intuitive things is a novel idea. And it felt like it wanted to make a big, overarching statement on the horror genre when it’s really satirizing a specific subgenre and not much more. The ending was also stupid.

Scream was great because it knew that you knew what happens in horror movies and tried to subvert that, CITW knows that you know what happens in horror movies and that's it.

  25. I thought it was scary and funny. And clever.

I didn't really read into the deconstruction of horror tropes; I was too busy having a good time. Maybe your criticism has some validity to it, that that aspect of the film is lacking. I personally didn't realize that was one of the film's aspirations.

(I haven't seen Scream [gasp inorite], so I can't really comment on that comparison)
