Witchboard was some real goofy shit. Characters that looked like they had just walked off the set of Wishbone, a villain saying “wakey wakey eggs and bakey,” into the camera, an evil drug dealer with an accent that literally made me laugh out loud in the theater. It was so bad, but it has some things that need to be seen to be believed. I wonder why this was made.
Twisted Issues is fucking wild lol SOV-heads in here need to watch it. It's pre-Slacker and The Crow, but has elements of both. Think an SOV version of Frankenstein about a skater that also has the counter-cultursl elements of Repo Man. It's like a surreal supernatural slasher with full DIY/punk live music sequences. And it's on YouTube!
Hallucinations (also on YouTube) is also a low-key banger. Polonia Brothers movies are insane and kind of feel like Napoleon Dynamite directing/starrng in super degenerate shit lol. A full look at their filmography reveals that in recent years, they've directed 14 shark movies along the lines of Amityville Shark and Clown Camp Shark Attack
Saturn's Core put out a Twisted Issues blu last month. I'm waiting for a sale to grab it, but it's been on my list forever. Looks great. The Polonias rock. Feeders, Splatter Farm (where one goes full frontal for some reason lol), Hallucinations. All fun stuff. John unfortunately passed away from an aneurysm in the late 00s, and Mark made HalloweeNight in his honor. This review is a good one. Definitely a must watch for spooky season
There's a scene about 15 mins into Hallucinations that will stick with you for the rest of your life. If you are on the fence about the Polonias or SOV, just FF there and judge for yourself
I said I’d be more thoughtful about my posts in here so here’s a longer review I posted to my LB: “Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey” - Witchboard, 2025 On paper, this should have worked for me. It’s dumb as hell, some of the accents literally had me laughing out loud (at one point I even whipped my phone out to send a clip of one of the accents to a friend, something I would ordinarily never do in a theater no matter how empty), and there was even some serious time travel Freaky Friday-ing going on at some point. There were also things that happened in this that I’m not sure you’d believe without seeing it for yourself. But unfortunately, I think I felt more confused than anything else. Why was this made? Why did some of the characters look like they just stepped off the set of Wishbone? What was with the Khaleesi triplets and why did part of the score sound like I was watching Succession? Is it really possible for a chef and their crew to routinely pick enough mushrooms to sustain a restaurant in New Orleans? Do corpse shrooms really make people that horny? Corpse shrooms? Despite the silliness, I just didn’t find it all that charming. I saw some reviews comparing it to SOV horror, but I just didn’t find this at all passionate enough to warrant that comparison. I do wonder if it would’ve worked better with a crowd, but ultimately these made for late night TV vibes didn’t do much for me last night, alone in the theater. Gets some stars for making me laugh, and the shower scene was kind of dope. Plus… him trying to find the cat that stole a dismembered hand only to get confused among the crowd of alley cats had me rolling.
I just finished the shitshow that is Madhouse so my streak of cool slashers has officially come to an end. I just started Maniac but with how shitty that was I feel the need to ask anyone who may have seen Maniac if it's watchable at least. Madhouse left such a bad taste in my mouth that it's very hard to trust other Tubi movies at the moment
Maniac is extremely watchable (if you have the stomach for it). Wild, awesome movie but it’s been many years since I’ve seen it.
hah okay, sounds like i'm not missing out on much. the showtimes here are way too late for me. i was considering going bc the trailer was kindasorta interesting. i havent even seen the og i've seen Together and Weapons, and Strange Harvest isn't playing here anymore, so i guess i've run out of horror to watch in theaters. for now.
just kinda sad I'm running out of hidden gems in slashers on Tubi but I have been going hard so it's to be expected I guess
