OG Fright Night is one of my favorites. Never gets old.

Did Hot Fuzz for the first time yesterday and LOVED it but was surprised by the slasher vibes it kinda put out. Honestly i fully expected it to rock but just thought it would be a full on buddy cop comedy

Fright Night good. Some how have never seen hot fuzz.

  4. Some days, I like Hot Fuzz even more than Shaun of the Dead. Total banger. The church steeple kill haunted me when I first saw it (I was 12)

just instantly proving my entire point, thanks for that

yes I'm aware people actually do have fair critiques of it and I'm always happy to read a @Zilla breakdown of a movie, but those quotes aren't from this thread which is obviously what I was talking about

idk man, feels like not that long ago this thread could've at least had some healthy back-and-forth about a divisive movie but now all the air just gets taken up with these lazy cheap shots that just kill the conversation dead, as Hal just perfectly demonstrated for me up there. hate to sound so dramatic, it's the theatre kid in me coming out but what are we even doing here if people feel like they can't have discussions in the... thread where we discuss horror lol

it kinda happened so gradually I didn't notice it but I just find myself wanting to engage with the thread less and less because the vibe is just worse. if it's a sign of the future that we just have this dismissive kinda nasty way of talking about things now, or I guess we just talk shit about directors' personalities in a super rude way for no good reason I can see (took almost a whole hour for this to happen after my post yesterday lol) I think it's fair to at least call it out. or I just need a healthy break from this place if nobody else thinks we're just slowly heading towards the insufferable discourse that always pops up in the dedicated movie threads here

I held out for while but its absolutely worth it. I’d personally probably rank it 3rd out of Wright’s Cornetto trilogy but that is in no way a slight. What a group of films

  10. I've kinda noticed that ever since @digitalsea left the vibe's been off

After all the Perkins talk we watched Gretel & Hansel today. My fiance was looking for something spooky and summery, but not summer camp slasher and it delivered on the vibes. I really liked it. Dragged a little in the middle for 90 minute movie, but it looked great.

Starting Bloodlines right now. First scene is dope, reminded me a lot of Ghost Ship.

  14. I gave my critique of Longlegs and need to catch up on that lengthy post but I just stopped by to say a few things:

    1) Barbarian gets better every time I watch it

    2) Lord help me, I just fired up M3GAN 2.0

    3) Has anyone seen the Neil Blomkamp film Demonic? It has brutal reviews, but I remember the trailers showing some really cool integration of tech and like possession shit

    4) I also miss @digitalsea and will email him again on the thread's behalf.

  15. Unfortunately torn without much to weigh in on there as I love this thread and want it to feel comfortable for everyone (or as many users as possible), but also don't really see any discussion being killed in here (the Weapons thread is different and I know I didn't help there) and kind of think we all need to take it just a little less personally when someone dislikes a film or director we enjoy. I don't want to say it's a toughen up situation but I understand why some people are not going to think Skinamarink is a breakthrough in horror the way I do, and if someone wants to post about how boring it is, I get it! I will probably just reiterate how much I love it and move on. I don't think it always needs to be that deep in here, but I'm sorry if that vibe is throwing anyone off

edit: and I am open to suggestions w/r/t what would make more people more comfortable provided it doesn't require me to write a dissertation about every movie I like or dislike in here

You must fix your heart Supporter

Yeah, horror and filmmaking in general are always going to be subject to taste so sometimes the same thing that makes one person love something will not work at all for another. It's so easy to just completely disagree with someone else's take but that doesn't mean either person is wrong.

I think if anything I get a little jealous when there's a film other people love that I just can't really connect with in the same way, especially if it's something like Skinamarink where I actively disliked the experience or Weapons where it seems the love is nearly unanimous. But on the flip side there will be films I adore that a lot of other people hate and that can be special too because it must be more specifically attuned to my tastes.

Idk, I'm not sure I really said much of anything there but yeah positive and negative takes on everything are worthwhile!

definitely not asking anyone to write any dissertations lol (unless they want to!) and nor do I want everyone to agree with me on everything, I was trying to argue in favour of healthy discussion but may not be expressing myself the best. I was trying to say we could be a bit less dismissive when we're butting heads about things on here, and that definitely applies to me as well. I just remember this thread always being super friendly and welcoming in the past and it feels like it's slipped away a bit recently; to go back to my other point coming here and seeing super rude namecalling about directors that doesn't have anything to do with their art bums me out a bit. it's just a few users doing it in here, certainly not a majority but it's a recent thing I'm not super comfortable with that I think we could probably do without

again if nobody else feels this way and I'm just yapping to myself I'll take a break and get some perspective, but the fact that another longtime user dipped out just a couple months ago makes me think there's something here. but idk I'll leave it there for now and stop cluttering up the thread for everyone else

I honestly haven’t really picked up on any serious bad vibes in here. I can only assume that @Rowan5215 is at least in part referring to me calling the Philippou brothers dumb twice now, and while I don’t mean for my snarky comments to always be taken seriously (and I do admittedly find it confusing that anyone in here would take offense to that of all things), I am sorry if I’ve contributed in any way to the apparent shift of overall tone in this thread. I still consider this one of my favorite threads on Chorus, and I sometimes forget that you all don’t actually know me which leads to me just saying dumb, thoughtless shit on a whim under the assumption that it’ll either go ignored or that you’ll know I’m just being silly. I would literally never say anything with the intention of making anybody feel like they’re wrong or shouldn’t bring up art that they love; I’d also never attack somebody for enjoying what they do, which should go without saying considering I myself am often in the minority with the horror that I don’t enjoy. Anyway, perhaps this has nothing to do with me in the first place, but just figured I’d throw this out there!

I also miss digitalsea and wish that whole thing hadn’t happened.

Not to get too off track, but to be clear since I brought them up, I don’t think their movies are dumb. I think they’re scary and well directed and they know how to craft horrifying imagery. But beyond the relentless ugliness of their movies, which in general just seldom works for me, I’m very picky about how trauma is portrayed in horror movies. In my opinion, their scripts don’t do enough with it to handle such heavy topics in a way as seriously as they seem to aspire to, and it comes across as borderline offensive and surface level to me. I know that’s not a popular take and most if not everyone would disagree, but that’s where I’m coming from. I 100000% understand why people love their movies as much as they do.
