What did you think? I only made it like 30-40 minutes into that one, haha. Went from thinking it was stupid in a way I could enjoy to ultimately just thinking it was stupid.
I think it's a good movie. it just kinda loses itself somewhere along the way. Cage is great in it but there does feel like some things should have been expanded on here and there.
it can be truly exhausting being in this thread as a Longlegs lover sometimes lol, it's like every single page someone says it was bad and almost never they actually elaborate on why. just feels like an easy target for some low effort "movie bad haha" posting most of the time
tbf I liked it a lot up until the very end. It's not a bad movie, and neither is The Monkey, The Blackcoat's Daughter is just that good
I'll bite - Perkins is just a way better director than he is a writer. The visuals and atmosphere in Longlegs are fantastic, and Cage does his thing (complimentary), but a lot of the performances are stilted (everyone delivering dialogue with a thousand-mile stare, the police captain being straight out of a 90s cop flick, the way the girl in the institution talks), the dialogue is bizarre ("He worships Satan, but in the United States of America, it's his right to do so."), and with the psychic stuff it just generally falls on the wrong side of bonkers for me. I usually like weird movies that don't give you all of the pieces, but in Longlegs, it seems like Perkins both over-explains some things and withholds information where I wish we were given more. It's a cool and fun watch without the hype, but I personally don't think it's a great movie.
The Monkey isn't a great movie either, but I think the tone, dialogue, and general identity of the film are way more nailed down and satisfying/enjoyable. I don't think Longlegs knows what it is half of the time.
Yeah, I’m not sold on Perkins at all. I thought maybe hearing interviews with him would endear me to him and that just made me like him less.
In terms of new school 2020's horror directors I think Zach Cregger, Ti West, and Parker Finn (I am a big Smile head) are my favorites. The Philippou brothers are alright but don't blow me away. Not impressed with Perkins.
As I mentioned earlier Danny Philippou is another person who you see what they're actually like behind the camera and are like "Jesus what an annoying weirdo"
I knew someone would say this. I am talking about big breakout films within the genre of horror. Prior to X West mostly made small low budget festival pieces, direct to video films, and stuff for horror anthologies.
Were you in the Horror thread on AP? He was all anyone talked about for a while. He’s had a long enough career for the X trilogy to be a redemption story after he fell out of favor for almost a decade
