I love a horror-comedy, but Evil Dead 2 is almost too goofy. Army of Darkness works better imo because it feels more aware that it is a weird genre anomaly that is slapstick first and horror second.
I wouldn't be surprised if a first-time binge might also coloring your expectations just because so many people grew up with specific memories attached to these films. I still remember the first time I saw the OG, Army of Darkness, and 2013 specifically.
fair point. i will definitely revisit them with some distance between them (will probably get to Ash vs. Evil Dead too, but i gotta go looking for it because i don't wanna pay for Starz)
Anyone got recommendations for movies with a similar tone to Widow’s Bay? I think it balanced the comedy and horror in such a fun way.
I would need to revisit them but I always remember Evil Dead 2 being my favorite. I honestly don’t even know if I saw Army of Darkness more than once
I know a lot of people find it boring but I personally love it. I’d say the Innkeepers has a very similar tone to Widow’s Bay. I feel like you’ve already seen it though lol. If I think of more I’ll quote you
Widow's Bay reminded me so much of classic X-Files (even down to the ending of the overarching story being a big letdown lmao). I feel like that whole season's DNA is in an episode like Quagmire
My intro to evil dead was going to the 2013 panel at wondercon and the crowd losing its mind at the tongue cutting scene. I prefer these movies mean and nasty.
I agree with you on this one actually. And I also found House of the Devil pretty underwhelming as well. So I was kinda disappointed to find that the only two films I saw of Ti West outside of the X trilogy just didn't really work for me
First time I ever saw The Evil Dead was on a 27 inch old school tv in a detached barn/garage in the woods during fall. That’s why the OG will forever be best.
I had wanted to see it just from reading about it online. So in like 7th grade a girl in our class had a halloween party and her older brothers had it on dvd so i convinced everyone that we should watch it. The tree scene did not go over well.
the tree scene is a big reason why I have trouble getting on with the OG as much as the rest of the series
lmao true, both are just on the wrong side of mean spirited for me especially when 2 and Army of Darkness are just a rip roaring good time. top tier beer movies
Looks as far up my alley as anything could get. Hell yeah EDIT: Woah, it looks like this could finally be Bryan Fortin's films getting a real release. I've been interested in his stuff since The Ringer posted an article about him back in 2020. The Public-Access Horror King of the North Shore - The Ringer
