Read it at first as VHS : SOV and was like dang full send on the low grade stuff! Was honestly here for it but I guess that’s essentially what they all sort of are anyway haha
Sorcerer (1977) is NOT a horror film, but the atmosphere, tone, and score all feel like Friedkin dipping his toes into Carpenter territory, despite the story being completely grounded. And there is a scene towards the end that is just as tense and unnerving as a lot of horror from the period. FFO: The Exorcist, Safdie films, drama/thriller/action hybrids
watched Welcome to Raccoon City tonight, it's pretty fun. directing is definitely the big plus, some really creative camera angles and framing which is more than you can say for any of the Milla movies lol. all the background details like the first aid spray ad and Lisa Trevor's design were phenomenal acting was... fine for the most part, Claire was the only character they really nailed. I thought the Leon backlash was just gonna be chuds mad that they cast a nonwhite actor as him, but they really did totally butcher that character scriptwise unfortunately. still fun, I would've watched a sequel but bring on Cregger RE
I have mixed feelings on Evil Dead 2013 and Rise. While some scenes can definitely be too much for me, it never goes toooo far, so I can still appreciate the writing/directing/acting. I think that's my limit tho, I'm not about to check out stuff like Terrifier and Martyrs
really liked - but didn't necessarily love - Evil Dead Rise. probably one of the more inventive and creative takes on the concept, paired with some fantastic acting and some creepy and wild shit. but not every gross moment really worked for me the way that 2013 or the OG did. maybe it's the CG, but some of it either felt conventional or cheap. still a really fun time overall, and i'm intrigued to see what they do with Burn this weekend. preliminary ranking of the movies: The Evil Dead Evil Dead (2013) Evil Dead Rise Army of Darkness Evil Dead 2
Funko is releasing a Nikki Pop for those of us who like this stuff haha. Preorders going live at 11am est
Respectfully, this ranking is WILD, but...it also might be mine? Lmao. Can't be mad when the quality is that high across the board imo. Also, Rise grew on me over time and our tastes seem relatively aligned, so I wonder if that could be the case with you, too. The people I'm supposed to catch Burn with are dragging their feet on getting tickets for this weekend and I'm very close to rolling solo because I don't want to miss this AND Jackass.
Watched another non-horror but weirdly adjacent flick last night - Miracle Mile. It's like if someone distilled Threads into an After Hours or Beau is Afraid format and gave it the aesthetics of Night of The Comet or Weekend and Bernie's, lol. Colorful, bleak, vaporwave cinema.
Yeah that one and Night of the Comet both nail that ethereal quality. Would also recommend Crime Wave, even if it’s much more of a unique thing. It fills a similar area of nostalgia imo.
to be fair, like you, i really do like all of them in their own ways (my own nitpicks with slapstick or time period-specific tropes aside). and Rise was really enjoyable. i just think i need to stop setting my expectations so high when every movie has a different vision on how to execute the concept. just like how the OG and 2 felt so different in tone, my love of 2013 was probably helped along by my dislike of some of the comedic elements – and the desire to see some more gore again – in Army of Darkness. we watched all 5 of these over the course of 4 days, so i was still riding that high from Fede's version when i got to Rise, and i guess my expectation was that the gore would be on par/as practical as the previous film, or that it would shock me the same way, and i guess i just didn't get that in the way i was expecting. i'd definitely love to watch it again though, because i think the premise was probably my favorite and the most clever of the whole franchise, and the ways they incorporated elements of the series lore (namely the design of the Necronomicon, the recitation of the trigger words through vinyl, and stuff of that nature) were really fun. plus everyone did a great job on the acting front. i just need to put up that barrier that every take will be unique. definitely try to score tickets, even if you have to go by yourself! the theater we're seeing it in will be Dolby Atmos-capable, so i'm hoping for some sinister mixing.
conceptually, sure, it's a nice expansion on the lore of the first film. but the rest of its execution – be it toning down the gore, leaning into slapstick, Ash's characterization – feels like a step backwards for me. but you do you
