the design of the outside steel thing (my brain is too tired to remember what you call it lol) shows up a lot, but I don't remember the mirror itself making an appearance since
on a non Flanagan note I just beat the new Resident Evil game, and I'm getting a hankering to watch the live action movies (bad) or the CGI movies (arguably worse but also more entertaining)
The Netflix series is quite good if you consider it its own thing. They threw the RE IP onto it just to get ppl in the door
the welcome to raccoon city film was decent for an RE film i felt. the other live action films are abominations
I actually haven't seen Welcome to RC I should check that out. RE films cannot be good unless they have a scene like this btw
finally got my hands on Bring Her Back on bluray. I kept waiting for 1) Target to do its B2G1 on movies and 2) the price to drop down (iirc they had it for like $32), but eventually, by the time the sale rolled around again, i realized the film was delisted! sooo after months and months, I finally decided to get it for $27 from Amoeba instead haha. anyway, i had to rewatch it straightaway. i... forgot how fucking gnarly this film was lolol. the prosthetics/makeup and sound design were realllly well done. same as with Talk to Me. these guys really know what they're doing. and they realllly like water imagery lolol i noticed a lot more of the foreshadowing and the motifs this time around, and also subtitles helps me with those Australian accents, heh. maybe spoilers ahead? i think my main takeaway from this rewatch was how effective the film was at making me sympathetic towards the villain of the story. that's definitely in large part thanks to an incredible performance by Sally Hawkins, but I think because the Phillippou brothers were also going through grief irl as they were making this, they really nailed that aspect of it when they wrote her character. i was appalled all over again by the lengths she would go to bring back her daughter, but at the same time, like, i get it, y'know? and it's because of scenes like when she was watching videos of her daughter. i'm glad they included stuff like that, it makes the character feel so complex and real as opposed to just straightforwardly evil. the film doesn't justify her actions, but i couldn't help but relate to and understand the human aspects of it. idk if i'm making any sense, i feel like i'm rambling. of course, i think it's terrible that Sally Hawkins didn't get an Oscar nom for this role (like Toni Collette in Hereditary), but i think another unsung hero in this is Sora Wong. for someone who had no experience acting, i think she did an amazing job, and I hope she continues acting in the future. her race doesn't really add anything to the story of the film itself but as a fellow asian person i just feel so proud of her. as sad as it is that Sally Hawkins didn't get a nom, i'm glad The Substance, Sinners, and Weapons got more recognition in acting categories in subsequent years. maybe there's hope for something like Inde in Obsession, for example. edit: i'm watching the behind the scenes featurette and before i forget i wanted to mention Jonah Wren Phillips, the kid who plays ollie, did a really great job for a role that had like zero lines of dialogue. and by the way, also a big takeaway from this rewatch is just how much shit this character goes through, i don't think i fully grasped that the first time i watched it.
Welcome to RC is underrated if you ask me. Scratches the itch better than any of the other RE movies.
Speaking of Bring Me Back! I was recently featured on a podcast discussing films by filmmakers who got their start on Youtube. Obsession and Backrooms obviously, but also Bring Her Back, Talk to Me, Iron Lung, Shelby Oaks, Skinamarink...yeah. Had a blast. Available wherever you get your podcasts. Also repping my pride "Exist Out of Spite" shirt
RE 02 is so dumb but so much fucking fun lol. the laser trap sequence and the villain reveal rock even though most of the rest is really bad idk why the jank PS1 tier animation makes "you're all going to die down here" so much creepier than if it looked like, good
Also the RE movies I've seen are...not great, but fun for what they are? Scratch that distinct 2000s horror/video game adaptation itch lol. I was actually really enjoying Apocalypse but never got around to finishing it, felt like a big step-up from the first two. I should maybe circle back. I honestly want to watch the Underworld films but don't think they're streaming.
my issue with the laser trap is that they blow like 90% of the deaths on that one scene, which leaves little for later.
yeah and they kill the coolest character there too but incredibly bland corporate espionage guy survives till the end somehow, still a classic sequence though
The zombies in the first movie are REALLLLY going for it in some of the scenes.. like, super comical.
Would they have been better received if she played Jill or something? idk I've never seen them and I only relatively recently played the games, I just know her character isn't in them
