yeah Lost Highway is goated. I love in the middle of that iconic terrifying Mystery Man scene when Pullman just deadpans "that's fuckin crazy man", takes me out every time
Pullman is so good and it seems like the less of a Lynch "regular" an actor is, the more likely I am to enjoy their performance in his films. Like someone who isn't on the wavelength of whatever surreal shit is actually happening is so funny and relatable. I also think Lost Highway helped me start to "get" Lynch in the sense that...I don't think he's always that serious. Robert Loggia shouting highway death statistics while beating the shit out of that guy for tailgating is lowkey very funny. And Lynch's fascination with the 50s/noir shit is corny in the nicest way possible. Once that piece clicked for me -- this guy is less of an intimidating titan of American film and more like an endearing dork with a great eye for disturbing imagery and dream logic -- I stopped working so hard to analyze everything on the screen. It's been helpful in my journey with him for sure.
Pullman's everyman performance definitely does a lot of heavy lifting in that movie although I must say that Kyle MacLachlan may straight up be my favourite actor just because of Twin Peaks glad to hear it, and I actually think a lot of people fall into the trap of micro analysing his work to death and forget to just sometimes turn your mind off and let the imagery wash over. like of course there's plenty of meaty stuff to break down with his movies but sometimes you just gotta watch Justin Theroux argue with a cowboy and remember that Lynch first and foremost was just putting his subconscious onto the screen
Tried to watch Lost Highway on someone's plex in here months ago but it was so out of sync I had to quit on it lol
Saw Obsession last night and it was maybe the most disturbing movie I've seen in a while, which is weird to say because on paper it doesn't sound like it would be, and it was also really funny. The scene with the phone call was simultaneously one of the funniest moments and the most disturbing. My jaw literally dropped. Saw it in a packed theater on a Tuesday night which is great to see for once (although people have no respect for the rules of cinema anymore and every time a see someone with their phone out in the theater I want to throw things)
when I saw Mando last Thursday, dude in front of me was holding his phone like 2 feet in front of his face and up and was looking at instagram models almost the entire movie. pretty sure he was sitting with his wife too. very cool lmao
Think Backrooms will be worth seeing at the theater? I’m on the fence about it. I want to see it but it’s not at the top of my list if you know what I’m saying lol
Probably not necessarily worth it for the big screen specifically. Kane has being making this stuff on youtube for years and I watched it all on my laptop and really liked it. All that being said, i’m seeing it tomorrow and can report back!
here to report Backrooms is pretty good! maybe falls a bit short of greatness, just because the plotting and character writing is a little bit shaky and the big third act swing doesn't really hit the way I think it was intended. but damn the set design and the use of perspective is absolutely phenomenal, dude's eye for detail at 22yo is pretty astonishing
also worth mentioning reactions were fairly split in the group I went with, my friend who was big into the original YT series said they loved it but a couple of the guys who went in cold weren't impressed. I'm somewhere in between, it's flawed for sure but a very impressive debut
I just recently ran through all of the YT stuff so I'm hoping to benefit from that in the most nerdy way
I feel like it will be worth seeing on the big screen if you enjoy the look of that set, which is obviously the big draw. I'm excited. Theater was fucking packed for tomorrow night though, we wound up getting the back row of the front section (which itself is empty aside from us).
Would like to double-feature The Brood and Infinity Pool soon. Also have a hankering to rewatch Pet Sematary, which I think will fuck me up more now as a dad, and I had no idea Del Toro wanted to do an adaptation until I read about it on Wikipedia yesterday...dude is so passionate. I would love to see that.
The original version of this was with the BK King from quite awhile ago. Looks to be the exact same thing.
