I Love Boosters is so good, didn't mention it because its not horror but there is some wild practical effects stuff especially in the third act. I think that's second or third favorite of the year after Obsession and I Want Your Sex, can't wait for people to see that when it's out.
Undertone was...okay. Creepy, but disappointing. Top three is easily Obsession, Hokum, and Bone Temple, but I'm behind and might take the long weekend to catch up.
wish I would've caught Hokum in theaters but was dealing with a sick kitty. Looking forward to catching it on streaming. Obsession and Bone Temple currently duking it out for my favorite film of the year.
Her Private Hell gets standing ovation... and negative letterboxd reviews... I thought Passenger was next week. idk if I wanna prioritize it over other stuff that's out just bc it's horror. I gotta see Is God Is and I Love Boosters, MandoGrogu and MK2. But I feel like it has a higher chance of leaving theaters sooner than the others so. Reviews are preeeetty mid tho? If I'm craving horror that much I'm probably better off seeing Obsession again
i mean it's such a weird metric for how good a film is. ppl won't stop clapping bc other ppl won't stop clapping. i love sophie and seeing her get teary eyed was sweet but liek. idk refn isn't even that great, neon demon was probs a fluke and tbh i'm not sure it even holds up anymore.
Yeah I think those standing ovation bits are just used for pull quotes at this point. Not really sure it’s indicative of anything
Also probably gonna sit out Passenger until I can watch later on at home. Gonna hit Obsession again soon and stoked on Backrooms next week.
As someone who often enjoys style over substance (which seems to be the primary criticism of Her Private Hell), i can't really explain why something like Velvet Buzzsaw doesn't work for me yet something like The Perfection does, but I do think if I were to rewatch Neon Demon now I'd be much less impressed with it than I was when it came out. I loved Sophie in Heretic and Companion tho (and Yellowjackets!) so it feels sad that I potentially won't even give this new one a chance.
Neon Demon (and Drive) are both great! The Perfection was too shocking for shocking's sake for me. Velvet Buzzsaw was fun, but unsubstantial.
Haven’t revisited Drive in years but a much younger version of myself thought it was like, perfect haha
Faces of Death rocks lol the meta take is genuinely kind of fresh in a way Scream has lacked for a little while and Dacre Montgomery is great. I just laughed out loud at him editing his Reddit comment to take away and then add more question marks.
I definitely had more fun with The Perfection than Velvet Buzzsaw. Refn has been pretty inconsistent for me, but Drive and The Neon Demon are still two of my all time favourites so I'll always have hope for his stuff. I think his tv work has been far too drawn out and slow despite having moments of greatness. I'm hoping his return to film is a lot better than Copenhagen Cowboy.
