Probably gonna go see Obsession again before the end of the weekend. Something I've been thinking about: Barker's use of jump scares in the movie just work so well for me. He respects the audience enough to know that WE know a jump scare is on it's way. A good example of this is the scene with Bear and Sarah in the car. It's framed in such a way that you pretty much know Nikki is gonna show up at the window at some point but it doesn't matter. He just makes you sit there and stew in that tension. Also loved how the tension was so high throughout that even something like turning a shower off made you jump a bit
I've seen Curry's Dad all over Tiktok promoting the movie. He's so proud of his son and it's really dang wholesome.
Obsession is by far the best horror movie I’ve seen this year. Absolutely hilarious and terrifying at the same time. What a wild ride.
Yeah, I posted more about it in the movie thread but bottom line...I kind of loved it. Very dark and very absurd. I can't believe how well the time is pulled off. The score was great, too. He will do well with TCM, especially knowing he is aiming for something closer to the 2003 version (Obsession had a whiff of 2000s horror to it). Definitely understand it not being for everyone, but also feels destined to be a future classic. A nice, distinct vision that has clear influences without totally aping any of them.
I am super curious, and this is not a dig AT ALL because the movie is definitely very dark, but for folks who felt it was too "mean," how do you feel about films like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Classics that are relentlessly bleak? Or is the problem more-so that movies like Obsession attempt a layer of pitch-black horror over subject matter with extremely dark implications?
I do not feel like it was that mean. There’s one kill that is Terrifier like, but that’s about as far as mean goes.
Eh, having a woman hellishly trapped inside her own body with basically zero control over what she says and does, let alone what happens to her is pretty mean lol
I get what you’re saying. I guess my point is that horror is supposed to be mean at times and it’s done very well as opposed to the mean horror that I don’t enjoy which is very torture porn heavy. I view this to the same way I view The Sadness. Sure it’s fucked up and mean at times, but it has substance and is done in a way that’s entertaining rather than being mean just for the sake of being mean.
Surprised to see mixed-nehative reviews for Aenigma, because I had an absolute blast with it and can't wait to screen it in August. Who else but Fulci will give you death by snails and statues coming to life? Free on YouTube!
It’s embarrassing that I had such little attention span last night that I couldn’t even get through Buffet Infinity, which is basically just a series of fake ads that don’t feel quite right, but I was having a lot of fun with it so figured I’d post about it in here because even though I didn’t even really get to the meat of it I think some of you would be very into it. Excited to finish it up sometime this week.
Did I mention it here? Watched the other week and thought they had a ton of fun with the format. Kind of runs out of steam at the end but starts out very fun and some good moments. Its basically the horror version of this sketch:
Been on my radar, sounds like a perfect way to end the weekend - is it only available for rent right now?
Forbidden Fruits was decent. Got much better an hour or so in. Pedretti's accent seemed to come and go at times but aside from that she was the highlight of the film. Pretty much Mean Girls meets the Craft but without powers lol
