Hokum was so good! Really worked for me despite mayhaps having one too many plotlines and relying too heavily on jumpscares (I also had one lady scream at the first one and everyone around her chuckled lolol). Felt like a creepier and more grounded, folk horror version of 1408.
I have mixed feelings on the bunny man. Terrifying character design, made the trailer really stick with me. I was kinda expecting him to be a bigger part of the plot bc of that. Like, Oh, is that the big bad? I'm kinda glad he was used sparingly, the scene where he talks just made him less scary. His jump scares always got me the worst, though. I think I've said this before, that's probably the creepiest character design I've seen since the babadook
Leviticus was pretty much gay It Follows, but the subversions on that premise and the emotional core, plus some great core performances really elevated it
Honestly just the monster being the person you most desire not just random people is a very good twist on the concept
Did the classic thing of posting and immediately changing my mind lol I did A Dark Song and Freaky Tales and both were very, very good for being completely different vibes. A Dark Song really hit for me.
Going to be announcing A Bucket of Blood as our May movie screening soon! Outdoor showing with a tailgate beforehand and a "bad art" contest to boot!
got a pretty big group together to see Hokum tonight, none of us have any idea what to expect outside of the vibe of the trailer. gonna be a good night
Hokum was really really good. I still have a few issues with McCarthy's writing ( like him pretty much remaking 1408 this time lol) but fuck me can the dude direct a tense sequence
yeah I really thought he was gonna be the main monster lol, kinda surprised too. feel like I would've preferred that design being the witch too instead of the kinda generic creepy old lady they went for
I loved the restraint of only having Jack appear a few times and the primary jump scare with him was scary as hell imo just bc he was so scary to look at. I agree that the witch design was a bit boring and yeah I’ve already said this but the writing was again the weakest part but as a whole it bothered me less here than caveat and oddity. My appreciation since seeing hokum has probably grown somewhat but so has my opinion that the scenes from his book - and when he sees it in that dome or whatever - are a little too cheesy for me. Lots of other things I could be critical but I’m able to look past a bit just because he really is so good at building tension and atmosphere.
Ghostkeeper is soooo cozy and ambient and hypnotic. Amazing winter horror vibes even if the film itself might not be anything particularly special (although it is Wendigo horror).
I thought the wraparound scenes were really strong and was surprised how emotional the end one made me, but yeah the hourglass bit was pretty silly lol
I didn’t think Adam Scott’s character was a good writer. Some good transitions in that opening scene tho.
Huge shoutout to Adam Cesare, author of Clown in a Cornfield. Came to my horror class today and was so nice and cool with my two classes. It rocked, hope to have him back next year.
