i think i missed my shot at seeing faces of death and undertone in theaters. i guess i could go watch the mummy but i don't really want to. i'm excited for hokum this week it feels like there's been at least one horror/-adjacent thing coming out almost every week, the last completely-not-horror thing i went to see was in february. we've had quite the streak
Mummy was not bad, but pretty dumb and more shocking than scary. even then with how much it wants you to think it's super mean, only one main character death feels like it's pulling punches quite a bit. Evil Dead Rise maybe set my expectations high but the acting was pretty rough from mostly everyone except May Calamawy who rocks on a positive note Hokum trailer looks dope as hell. I'm ready to love a McCarthy film after thinking his last two were a bunch of great scares in search of a plot or anything at all to say, I think he's got a classic in him though
I think Hokum delivers, and it's certainly the most cohesive of the 3 thus far. Would need to rewatch Caveat at this point though cause I've forgotten a lot of that one.
Yeah, this is how I felt about Caveat and Oddity. I liked both, but the narrative of each really hurt them for me. Hoping Hokum is a step up in that regard as I agree that McCarthy is definitely capable of something special.
Oddity was in fact the second movie of the Joe Bob special on Friday and I liked it even more on second watch. Good flick. Caveat was really good, too. Looking forward to Hokum. Dolly was so frustrating...obviously looks great being shot on 16mm, it's visually stylish with practical effects and gore, but there's been a string of horror releases recently that lean into being a pastiche of films that already exist and this is probably the worst case yet. Just absolutely no individual identity whatsoever. Barbarian but not as smart or fun, the look of TCM without earning it, an 80-minute film split into like seven "chapters" for no discernable reason, can't decide if it wants to be mean in a Rob Zombie way or funny in a camp way...just really suffers. Like, the Sean William Scott jaw stuff was brutal, but they had that MF saying full words when he didn't even have lips lol what are we doing here
In better news, I was SHOCKED at the turnout for our first movie screening! Was hoping for 10-15 people, got 40 and raised $200 in donations. Lots of folks already asking about the next one. We have another venue booked June through August, but we're looking at purchasing our own projector and screen to up the quality a bit and doing an outdoor screening of Teenagers from Outer Space next month with a tailgate beforehand :) I know y'all aren't local, but @madmanmookpresents on IG if anyone wants to follow!
Not feeling well at work, so I'm locked in my office watching Minnie's Midnight Massacre. Public domain horror is not for me. I think this movie is making feel worse as it's so bad and AI use is even worse.
Yeah, old horror films that are public domain rock but new films pulling from public domain characters are wack, which is unfortunate considering how much opportunity there is Escape from Tomorrow is still one of the most insane Disney-related horror films to exist
With the right person behind them, there is potential for sure but instead just soulless slop that's not even fun. I don't think I've watched Escape from Tomorrow. I'll have to add it to my list.
It's...a lot. Guerilla-filmed at Disney without permission, lol. Very Lynchian and surreal. It's grown on me a lot with time, hard not to appreciate the sheer audacity.
I remember hating Escape from Tomorrow but I can’t recall a single thing about it otherwise. I just looked and apparently he has a sort-of sequel coming out this year?
It's not a great watch, but it's fascinating. Looks like the psuedo-sequel is the same cast playing new characters in a paranoid conspiracy thriller that is less Disney-centric. I'm interested.
Agree with all of this 100% but the chapter break thing was so unbelievably funny to me. After a 4th chapter, it became so ridiculous and nonsensical. Clearly just having chapter titles for the sake of having chapter titles.
Oddity was great in building tension and got me a couple times which is more than nearly any movie ever does. Still need to watch Caveat and excited for hokum
This is not really horror, and in fact it was so depressing to me that I nearly had to turn it off, but the documentary Caterpillar was terrifying and I was basically either crying, screaming, or laughing uncomfortably the entire time (I was also extremely high though). Recommended. Fun fact: I found out about it because a friend of a friend texted her in disbelief that someone they know shows up in it. Again, it’s a really sad (albeit extremely human) and heartbreakingly vulnerable documentary, and the second half feels a little plodding, but it’s one of those documentaries you don’t forget.
Highly recommend. Second of the year behind Obsession. But also, I think everyone would like Obsession. Forbidden Fruits has a way more niche appeal.
Went and saw Normal last night and while not horror at all, it is directed by Ben Wheatley and it made me miss when he was making stuff like Kill List
