Curiosity is certainly getting the better of me regarding the original and if the bits that are shown in the new one are authentic and actually from the original, it looks hokey af
Original is definitely a rite of passage sort of thing. I remember watching it on either youtube or some other janky site back in high school. Vinegar Syndrome is putting out a new 4k of it, which seems like a bad way to experience it lol
Started M.O.M. Mothers of Madness last night and unfortunately don't think it's very good, but I only have about half an hour left, so will be finishing it. Then debating FNAF 2 because I'm a masochist I guess. Maybe Idle Hands and Dr. Caligari on Saturday night
Been contemplating an IAVN rewatch via Joe Bob since I missed that episode and who knows how long they'll be on Shudder. Feel like most of my favorite slashers of the decade so far are more slasher-adjacent or have that aura while being something else primarily (to their benefit): Pearl, Black Phone 2, In a Violent Nature, Hellraiser 2022, even Final Destination Bloodlines. Solid straightforward slashers are more sparse, but there are a few (Scream 2022, Heart Eyes, Terrifier 3, Clown in a Cornfield, Christmas Bloody Christmas). I remember liking There's Someone Inside Your House.
Seeing reactions to Lee Cronin's The Mummy calling it very fucked up and gross and scary with comparisons to everything from Bring Her Back and (of course) Evil Dead Rise to The Omen and Braindead lol. Getting VERY interested.
Evil Dead Rise is a movie I wanted to like way more than I did but there was enough there (especially the opening) that I’ll almost definitely catch The Mummy in theaters if the reviews are even remotely positive.
Finally rewatched The Bone Temple. Even better than the first time I watched it although the friend I watched with was a bit upset with the torture scene because it seemed a little unnecessary and overlong (I don’t entirely disagree although for whatever reason it doesn’t really bother me here). I was worried it would ruin the movie for her but she ended up loving it regardless.
Made a post last night about enjoying the FNAF movies when my brain is on autopilot but deleted it because the longer it went on, the more I realized nothing was happening lol. Did Little Shop of Horrors (1980s) with a friend tonight and it was much better, although it's criminal that they didn't go with the original ending. Currently watching Buzzard (Potrykas) and it's very fun but definitely not horror and kind of funny that it's on Shudder.
Holy buckets… The Ugly Stepsister was wild. I was genuinely so grossed out multiple times that I had to look away. I’ve been watching horror for most of my life so that’s saying something! I can see the comparisons to The Substance when it comes to chasing society’s standards of beauty, but I thought TUS felt overly cruel at times. While The Substance has humor and absurdity to break it up, TUS just felt like “let’s watch this woman kill herself for 2 hours”. Very, very well made but good lord. Feel bad movie of the year!
haven't seen outwaters because word of mouth has been poor. not sure i agree with the comparison but who knows
@OhTheWater I think you would like those Potrykus flicks on Shudder, particularly Vulcandaroza and Buzzard. Neither are straight-up horror but both are independent dark dramadies and Buzzard is maybe essential slacker cinema
Hell yeah they've both been on my list for a bit. I've had a jam packed couple of weekends so I have fallen behind on new watches.
I liked Buzzard a lot, maybe even slightly more than Vulcandaroza just because it didn't make me feel like shit lol. Very fun, feels a bit like the early Safdies stuff (Daddy Longlegs comes to mind) but sillier and with lower stakes. Overall, the Potrykus journey was a rewarding one. Still need to see Ape, which is the only feature that didn't hit Shudder for whatever reason. Really love Joshua Burge's presence in these movies, even if The Alchemist Cookbook is still my favorite.
