Sounds like the characters from Crash, or the bizzaro evil version of the very nice huckster who runs the Texas Chainsaw gas station and just tries to sell you pictures from locations in Texas where stuff was shot lol
IIRC, Faces of Death is largely fake with the exception of historical footage (mostly war) and animal death from like...old educational films? Still fucked up, but makes sense why it was such a grail for teenagers before social media. The fake death stuff is goofy from what I remember, but I've rarely heard of someone not regretting watching it, myself included lol. I do love the way this new film seems to be incorporating its reputation.
Triple-post - I watched Lost River last night, which isn't explicitly horror (and shouldn't have gotten Gosling director jail) but the "shell" stuff at the fetish club was pure Cronenberg nightmare fuel.
Lost River is a good watch, very underrated imo. worth it just for Matt Smith really going for it in one of his first film appearances
It's definitely a pastiche of 3-4 other writer/director styles that Gosling clearly admires but it is mostly very well-done for a debut and I would love to see another original from him.
Unfamiliar with it entirely but looking it up, it looks awesome. Why did it land him in director jail?
it's pretty meandering and unfocused, which I kinda like but I think people expected more of a straightforward thriller. feel like this was around when Gosling was in Place Beyond the Pines and everyone just wanted more of that from him lol, the Lost River cast is also pretty stacked with genre TV faces which probably set expectations the wrong way again. insane cast in retrospect though
I wouldn't even say meandering so much as, there's two overlapping stories happening and the focus is a bit uneven, but certainly forgivable for first time writer/director stuff. I think Cannes dismissed it as poverty fetishization and arthouse bro filmmaking, especially considering how much it echos Refn after Gosling did two films with him, but it definitely seems to be developing a cult following a decade later and I think it's deserved even if the film isn't perfect. It's scattershot, but not as scattershot as something like a Southland Tales (which I also love lol). It's worth the watch! And yeah, the cast is great.
FoD was awesome and I loved the premise! Definitely agree that with the review saying that this should’ve taken the new Scream’s place. Both leads were great and honestly make Dacre Montgomery an unhinged killer in more movies
This work week has been annoying so while I may regret this tomorrow morning I am seeing a movie tonight! (Faces of Death)

Oh no the speakers are like blown out so all dialogue sounds HORRIBLE lmao do I leave or hope that somebody that isn’t me goes and tells someone Edit: I’m gonna suffer through it but jesus christ lol hope there’s not a lot of yelling in it. Nobody seems to be reacting to it which is funny because it’s noticeably fucked.
