Hell yeah. Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker and (not horror but genre adjacent enough) 12 Monkeys tonight
Ready or Not 2 was solid imo, the tone was a lot darker than the first which kinda took away from the fun factor. the first one had such a good balance of laughs and violence, this one was just kinda tough to watch still good but not great, also I like the whole cast but there were some iffy line reads from everyone except Samara
also forgot to say it before but it's a pure delight to see Sarah Michelle Gellar on the big screen again even if it wasn't her best work. she's just a star and I hope she gets a lot more roles from it love that they went all out with the Buffy references in it too, give Radio Silence that reboot tbh
Fuck Scream 7 and it’s awful of course and all of that, but was in Atlanta and the surrounding area this past weekend and it was cool to eat and drink at where they filmed the best kill.
I thought the scene where Faith got beat to a pulp was extremely uncomfortable to watch and it just went for sooo long. in the first one the villains were kinda goofy but that dude was just too realistic
I still cant really get behind the decision that Shawn Hotasy's character made to actually accept Samara's proposal to get married. It would've been more believable if he had been like lusting after her the whole movie, but he wasn't - he was just all around unhinged. And he wasn't stupid stupid so I imagine he would've known that she had something up her sleeve? He had them both dead to rights and opts to halt everything to prepare for an impromptu wedding ceremony? I know we had to get to the ending setpiece and conclusion but that kinda took me out of it tbh.
I think they talked about the freezer she was in as very secure, with a line that they maybe didn’t have enough time to get her out before dawn. It didn’t seem like that to me, but I think that’s the internal logic the film was using that gave Grace leverage to make a deal. She would have to watch her sister die, but she could win the game in there. I also thought the beating scene was overkill, I think they wanted to establish a more serious less silly Satanist threat, which they did a few scenes later anyway with that surprise kill that set up the ending twist. Just too much, especially contrasted with the wedding venue scene which was so silly and fun, it’s like they had trouble keeping that tone the whole time. I also didn’t like that Grace and Faith had a bunch of heart to heart conversations that slowed the momentum down to zero, and ended just before someone found them. Reminded me of the latest Stranger Things, just bad writing, those could have complimented the action parts but it’s like they took turns. that said, it was still a really fun time, I liked it more than the first one. If they kept up the pace and had a consistent threat level it would have been a real classic.
First Madman Mook's Public Domain Theatre screening locked in for next month :) got an offer for summer programming at another venue and Halloween programming at our local art museum as well. Gonna be fun. If anyone has any free PD titles, let me know.
I don't have trouble believing anybody would want to marry Samara Weaving, but it just felt like there wasn't a clear direction for Titus for most of the film. I guess it was deliberate that SMG came off as the ruthless one at the start and they subverted that, but it was pretty hard to square the brother being so conflicted about killing his dad to snapping his sister's neck a day later lol still a good fun movie but not a great one. first one will have significantly more replay value imo
no one was going to tell me about the SOV analog horror movie that's available to rent now!? this looks goooood and unsettling and the right amout of silly.
I think the cover of May combined with it being from 2002 made me always think it was more of a straight to video cheapo horror flick, but man, this is way more of a lonely psychological drama, huh? Good shit so far.
Hoping to see Ready or Not 2 on Friday. Considered double-featuring with They Will Kill You, but they seem so, so similar lol. I've seen one very positive review for it and they rest appear to be middling. Anyone see Who Invited Them on Shudder?
yep! saw it at the scream unseen last week. liked it a lot more than I thought I would. has some cringey moments but I thought the action, score, and camera work were great.
while Ready or Not and They Will Kill You have a similar underlying "villain" I don't think they are anything alike outside of superficial stuff like being hyper violent and relying on some comedy.
