Splittooth Media has been doing a great Horror series throughout October. Ton of wonderful essays in there. Here's Vincent Albarano (again!) on Halloween Party from 1989. I think he does a good job of capturing what I like so much about SOV films. We Haunt the Airwaves: ‘Halloween Party’ (David Skowronski, 1989) - Split Tooth Media Here's one about the Friday films: Ceci N’est Pas Un Jason: Speculations on the Franchise Surrealism of Friday the 13th - Split Tooth Media
watched Friday the 13th for the first time! i kept thinking, wow, this would've been so scary if it was 1980 and this was the first slasher I ever saw. in 2025, tho, it's just really cozy. iconic music, iconic setting. when I first saw Scream i already knew who the killer was, so I'm glad i didn't with this movie, it was a good surprise. the kills were definitely gorier than Halloween, and the sfx were pulled off pretty well. i can see how this influenced every newer summer camp slasher i've seen before
Watched Freaky Tales last night. Not really horror/adjacent at all imo, which was strange because I feel like I remember that being the vibe of the trailer. Maybe it was just “freaky” along with the 80s vibes that had me thinking that. Either way, it rocked lol
The basketball one? There was plenty of blood I guess, haha. Like a Tarantino-esque action sequence. Definitely had a good time watching it regardless, yeah. Really impressive execution of the anthology format. Made me wish I was from the Bay Area!
watched A Nightmare on Elm Street for the first time! i kept thinking, wow, this would've been so scary if it was 1984 and this was the first slasher I ever saw. in 2025, tho, it's just really cozy. iconic music, iconic villain. the kills are really creative and i love the dream logic stuff. i'm surprised that this might be my favorite of the firsts of the big three franchises. i can see how this influenced every newer supernatural slasher i've seen before
Ah, that sucks. I didn't really know anything about the movie, other than coyotes invading people's homes and attacking them, which seemed like it might be fun. On a happier note, The Long Walk is also hitting VOD that day
the future transmissions in Prince of Darkness really unnerve me, some of the creepiest stuff Carpenter ever directed
Slowly getting through VHS Halloween over the last few days. Loved Fun Size. Not really digging the frame narrative, it should be more Halloweeny.
Home Haunt is definitely my favorite. Followed by Fun Size. Liked the Spanish one and the baby one was creepy. Kidprint had great Halloween vibes in the beginning but yeesh haha not for me. Frame narrative was wack. Don't they usually set up a reason why we're watching these videos?
Black Phone 2 was.... interesting lol. some fantastic direction choices and the way the dream sequences are represented is super cool. some of the writing and supporting characters are... really not good however, certainly some choices made with their dialogue. not sure how I feel about the movie overall
