i love how much of an asshole Justin Long is in this haha. just when there's a glimmer of hope that his character has changed, he does the worst thing imaginable in the moment and throws Tess off the tower. i also love how jarring the tonal shifts are. the first act builds suspense, tension, and dread so successfully, and then scariest sequence in the movie is followed by Justin Long singing and driving. Experiencing that in the theater was unforgettable i daresay the Mother is the most sympathetic character in the story tho with all she had to endure. as terrifying as she is in her own right, her intentions and protective nature are ultimately pure. i think Tess killing her is as much an act of mercy as it was one of self preservation. Tess as well continually showed concern for others, even when her own life was in danger. i think Georgina Campbell played her beautifully even upon rewatch the flashback scene gave me chills. Frank is easily one of the most evil characters i've seen in a horror movie. i think it's a good thing the film didn't show him actually doing what he did. leave all that to the imagination, it's more horrific that way, and it doesn't run the risk of inadvertently glorifying violence towards women. I consider this film "bonkers" right alongside stuff like Malignant and Cuckoo for how unexpected and crazy some of the plot elements are, but upon further reflection I feel like there's a lot of thematic and emotional depth here, even if it can be easily/haphazardly summed up with "misogyny bad" i'm so excited for Weapons
forgot to say we got the new I Know What You Did Last Summer trailer before Years and it kinda looks good lol
Top 10 of the year halfway through: 1. Bring Her Back 2. Sinners 3. Companion 4. Final Destination Bloodlines 5. Freaky Tales 6. The Ugly Stepsister 7. Opus 8. Clown in a Cornfield 9. The Monkey 10. Heart Eyes
Should probably catch Sinners today before it leaves theaters even tho I watched the first two 28 movies this past weekend just to see Years
I'm gonna hold off on a list until I can see Bring Her Back. And get the past like 50 movies I watched logged in Letterboxd. I swear I could spend a whole day doing it.
Hahaha hell yeah, the best SOV supernatural slasher about Dungeons and Dragons players I've ever seen
Sinners is as good as everyone says it is. still, couldn't help but think about MBJ's comments about Jonathan Majors, only half a dozen times throughout the movie tho, no more than that. Hailee Steinfeld and Jayme Lawson are pretty good in this and also really pretty
I liked 28 Years Later but also had a bunch of problems with it and the kid was so stupid and there should have been more zombies. Great spine work tho. I’ll put it number 8 below Opus, another fun but flawed one.
my midyear roundup, idk if I've actually seen more than 10 but I enjoyed all these lol 1. Sinners 2. Bring Her Back 3. The Monkey 4. Bloodlines 5. 28 Years Later 6. Companion 7. Locked 8. Prom Queen 9. Death of a Unicorn 10. Killer of Killers
Idek if I've seen 10 horror movies so far this year but I'd probably go something like this off the dome: Sinners Bring Her Back Presence Bloodlines Companion Ash Heart Eyes The Monkey Seeing 28 Years Later tonight and still need to do Killer of Killers, The Ugly Stepsister, Opus, Clown in a Cornfield, etc.
1. Nosferatu 2. The Ugly Stepsister 3. Sinners 4. The Girl with the Needle 5. The Shrouds 6. Final Destination Bloodlines 7. Companion 8. Presence 9. 28 Years Later 10. The Monkey I'm not sure how much of a horror movie The Shrouds is but Letterboxd lists it as such so I guess it counts. Also I'm stuck with UK release dates which is why Nosferatu is on here and I haven't had a chance to see Bring Her Back yet.
