Haunting of Hill House was so emotionally investing. Can’t say that about 90% of horror movies/shows.

That and Hereditary are my gold standard for recent entries that do this. I expect Midsommar to hit there as well. The Babadook also messed me up much more emotionally than it scared me.

The Exorcist and Don’t Look Now might be my all time favorite classics that work on a deeper personal level beyond the horror.

One episode in of Slasher season 3 and I already can't stand the shaky cam garbage.
Also everyone is over the top bad.
Looks like I'll be rooting for the slasher again.

Yeah I get the vibe there is only 2-3 decent human beings living in that building, and the purpose of this season is gonna be a reckoning-for-shitty-Americans type feel.

When you finish The Perfection and realize they named the god damn movie after pedophilia...punishment? Reward??? I was expecting a weird couple thing, which would have been bad enough as it is. But no they just dumped it allll in

Holy shit the perfection is so insultingly bad. How did this get so much buzz a few months ago? How are so many people liking it?

Just finished season 3 of Slasher. Some bad acting and awful characters, but pretty good for the most part imo

Question- does anyone know of any legitimate way to watch Possession (1981)? It doesn’t seem to be on anyyyyyy streaming service or even for sale on DVD/Blu-ray?

I think that Mondo Vision limited edition version is the main one. It does seem to still be for sale on eBay and Amazon but it isn’t cheap. Bummer that the YT one got taken down.

Also I’m still trying to push through Slasher and Wendy Crewson being the GRANDMOTHER has sent me reeling.

    Oof on Slasher season 3.
Not as bad as season 2 but no where near as enjoyable as season 1.
    Fun practical kills, tho.

Interesting to see the negative takes on The Perfection, Katie Rife of the AV Club was pretty positive about it and she comes at most reviews from a feminist context and didn’t seem to find it exploitative at all

Idk, I’m gonna check it out but have def tempered my expectations

Regarding The Perfection, I thought it was an incredible, riveting watch. It’s not often we get a movie that feels so mainstream yet simultaneously so exploitative. Felt a lot like certain South Korean horror films in that way.

I’ve heard from quite a few women who felt empowered by it, so I would never knock it for being tasteless. I think it gets a bit excited with delivering its message in the final act, a bit too much explaining and a flashback sequence that I didn’t buy, but I would absolutely recommend it to (certain) people simply for the thrill of it all.

That middle portion of the film, the bus ride, is my favourite sequence from a movie this year. Some of the tensest social horror I’ve ever seen, and it gives way to a bit of brilliant body horror. So awesome.

thought The Perfection was really bad, and I like most everything

I don’t dislike it for the reasons outlined in the thread already, difficult subject matter can result in really great work (Martyrs, Revenge etc) and this wasn’t at all graphic and nothing was shown on screen. It’s just clunky, cheesy but not in a fun way and outside of the first twist with the rewind every other wild turn it took felt totally unearned. Thought the dialogue/writing was bad which would have been fun for a B movie but this tried to play it straight and totally missed imo

    Huge letdown

Will wait for reviews on that one. It’s interesting to me that Farmiga and Wilson have remained in these roles for quite a few years now and even signed on to this despite the previous Annabelle movies.

  20. I liked Annabelle: Creation. Don't think I've ever actually watched the first movie all the way through. This one looks like it could go either way. I like the idea of that room of terrors coming to life basically, but nothing in the trailer seemed that inventive or fresh.

I first saw it in college because one of my favorite bands at the time Boys Night Out referenced the movie in a few of their songs. If you haven't already, read up on the real Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole. After Henry was captured, he confessed to over 600 murders but investigators believe he lied about most of them because he'd get rewarded with ice cream for each confession. Toole would later be named the murderer of Adam Walsh (whose father John created America's Most Wanted TV show in the wake of the death of his son).

I’m trying to readjust my expectations for Slasher as I’m watching and just get into it as standard mediocre horror fluff instead of anything at a higher level, but I still cannot get over how crazy it is that they play SO many tropes completely straight from the genre and in general. And not even just tropes but some scenes or ideas almost word for word from other pieces. I can’t wrap my head around what the tone is ultimately shooting for because those moments don’t seem to be intended as shout outs.

I’ll probably stick with it since I’ve done about half of season one, and I’m curious to see if two has a major change in quality. Sounds like that is the fan favorite.
