Oh wait, someone also puked in front of me near the end of Jurassic World, but that movie ruined the experience enough on its own.

There were soMe TERRIBLE assholes in front of us and at one point when one of the guys was on his phone my friend leaned over and said “excuse me, your phone is really bright” and he just said “k cool”
this group of people was also constantly in and out of the theatre, like they left several times during the movie and didn’t even stay for the whole thing
Why pay 15$ to go ruin someone else’s movie watching experience like get a goddamn life

    If we’re talking theater stories...

When I saw Shutter Island, I walked in the theater with the house lights still on and sat two rows behind a youngish (early 20s) girl with a baby carriage in the seat next to her. Confused why somone would bring a baby into an R-rated suspense thriller. Upon closer inspection it was a fake baby in it. About half an hour into the movie the doll made loud baby crying noises. The girl looked embarrassed and left the theater with the fake baby and never returned.

In college I got a part time job through work study at the campus movie theater in the student union as an usher. Easiest job ever, got paid to sit in on movies and handed out tickets to those who left to use the bathroom/went to get food to hand back as they came back in. We would show second run movies which typically was $2 for students. One weekend we got a copy of Syriana but it didn’t have subtitles (about a third of the movie is in Arabic). People came up to me to complain but had to explain it was just the copy we received. Nonetheless people were pissed and many left their garbage on the floor. Pro-tip: clean up after yourself in the theater.

This was my exact experience. Idk if it’s that they don’t know what to expect going in, and then they decide that they are just going to shit all over it because it subverted their expectations...or because they’re just fucking morons. There were like 10 people in my theatre continuously clucking in the back of the theatre just having a rousing good time while I’m trying to stay locked in.

Edit: echoing the issue with people just walking in and out. Exact same thing at my theatre. Just wandering around like a bunch of shit heads and not being subtle at all.

I'm indifferent to the Halloween trailer but it really highlights how special the original was. I don't usually even notice things like direction and lighting and soundtrack because I am uncultured swine, but the trailer for this new one looked fine but like it could be any old movie. Which doesn't mean it will be bad or anything, just reminds me of how nothing will touch that original for me and how much detail was put into it

Also Michael would straight up be like 70 or something now right? Fit af!

He’d be 61 at this point... I was never a huge fan of the original but understood it’s importance to the genre. I’ve come around in recent years since reading the original novelization which explained his origin. I know even back then it was low budget but just the cinematography seemed too dark and fuzzy for me particularly with the night scenes. I will say one of my favorite horror sequences is Laurie and her friend walking home from school and Laurie spotting Michael just staring down at her and then disappearing behind the bushes, straight up creepy.

I watched the new trailer last night and I am intrigued. I don’t mind if they’re retconning the sequels out, I guess since I was never devoted to the franchise. Though I was disappointed with the Friday the 13th and Nightmare reboots (my two favorite horror franchises). I think I’ve mentioned it before but I do like Zombie’s Halloween. But its sequel is forgettable (only thing I remember is the Chris Hardwick and Weird Al cameo)

I grew up watching Halloween but didn't rly have a sense of appreciation for it until a few years ago when I was randomly rewatching it and was like dang this is actually a great movie! The scene where Jamie is in the closet and the little slats on the door are causing shadows to form and then Michael comes thru and the light is going off and on and the shadows flicker is my fave. The big classic horror franchises all have duds so I'm whatever to what they do at this point. I hated Rob zombies versions with the intensity of 1000 suns lol so I figure it can't be worse than that...

Rob zombie's stuff just does not work for me. It makes me extremely uncomfortable but not in like a good horror kind of way. Just a gross way.

I agree that it is, which just makes his whole aesthetic gross, uncomfortable but then also ultimately kinda boring to me. Like I'm grossed out/disturbed but not in a way that's interesting, just kinda gratuitous like the way I'm grossed out but bored when a Saw sequel is on.

Hereditary got a D+ cinema score. Ouch. Not super surprised tho. I imagine this being a movie for people like us and not the general public.

This is definitely the second A24 film in recent memory that has been advertised as the “scariest film of the year.” I have to wait to til Monday to see it, so I can’t comment on this one. But The Witch is the other and we all know how that one goes. I love A24 for taking risks and putting out amazing movies traditional studios wouldn’t touch, but holy hell do they have a marketing problem. Or maybe they don’t and they know over hyping is the only way they’ll put asses in seats.

I mean, they were right about The Witch and the critical consensus seems to be that Hereditary lives up to the hype

I can agree that It Comes At Night was painfully mismarketed (even though I liked it more than most)

Oh yea, It Comes At Night was another great example. I’ve loved all three of these movies mentioned. The Witch was definitely creepy, but not scary. And from what I’ve gathered, Hereditary is very much a slow burn. Which doesn’t really do well with mainstream audiences that just want a masked killer and jump scares.

My concern with the tactics is that if they continually do it, how long until the general public loses confidence in A24 and stops going to their movies.

I love them all for various reasons until Roanoke and Cult, both of which I absolutely loathed. But Asylum is hands down the best they ever did and is absolutely worth a watch even if you don’t do the rest.

I definitely think part of the problem is that while A24’s horror movies are excellent in quality, they tend to be slower paced, atmospheric pieces versus the typical kinds of horror films that people are used to. That’s not a bad thing but with their marketing like @Cory mentioned, the hype is misleading and people are definitely going to be disappointed when they go in thinking they’re going to get one film but then get another film that they didn’t sign up for. Hereditary is very similar to The VVitch in terms of advertising, both are slow burns that rely on atmosphere and tension to deliver the horror versus like jump scares or whatever but the trailers paint the film as something different than what it actually is. Now while I dig that, many people don’t so the negative feedback is unsurprising.

I do think the whole “WATCHING THIS MOVIE WILL MAKE YOUR HEARTBEAT AS FAST AS A TWO HOUR WORKOUT BECAUSE IT’S THAT SCARY!” ad is silly because I definitely didn’t feel that way watching it but it does remind me of old horror movie trailers that did similar things, the grindhouse era in the 70’s was full of ads like that. It’s almost like an homage so I like it despite its silliness.

Overall, I really liked Hereditary and I honestly think it’s one of the top ten horror films this decade, but I can totally understand why someone wouldn’t like it.

I think A24 has enough of a strong fanbase that they’ll always make back the minuscule budgets for their movies. It’s not like some huge blockbuster flopping- Hereditary cost less than $10 million to make. They don’t seem to care about appealing to a wide audience, and that’s fine. I wish more studios were willing to take on interesting projects like these movies. I’m definitely not worried about their future or their trustworthiness.
