I saw this a while ago and I don’t remember who showed it to me. I’d forgotten about it. What’s weird is I don’t remember if it crept me out or made me laugh but... yeah that’s a very specific kind of creepy. It makes me think of surreal dreams I had when I was younger where nothing was overtly sinister but I’d wake up terrified anyway. It’s very off.

Edit: I just remembered my associate pastor showed this to me and he’s the one helping me through all of my problems now and I feel betrayed.

Suspira teaser is out. I’m pleasantly intrigued. I love the 70’s aesthetic. I also love that they don’t seem to be reusing the color palette of Argento’s film. I’m looking forward to this.

I was both surprised and intrigued at the lack of color in the trailer. A bold move, for sure.

I definitely don't want a shot-for-shot remake and would rather a director's vision of the film, and I have the utmost faith in Guadagnino, so I'm pumped.

Has this world stopped asking what it's thinking?

Halloween trailer on Friday, guys and ghouls!

  7. Rob Zombie's Halloween shouldn't have been a Halloween movie, imho. The first part of the film, the origin of Michael Meyers -- the part that Carpenter didn't like, despite telling Zombie to "make it his own" -- works much better than the second half. Carpenter does have a point that de-mystifying Michael as man rather than a force of nature does betray the character in a way, and the film becomes less exciting once it begins rehashing iconic scenes or kills from the original, so in all honesty, it probably would have worked better as an original serial killer piece on Zombie's part. I'm also not sold that I love Zombie's aesthetic the way I did in high school - like, I'm no prude, but some of the dialogue is absurdly vile, borderline edgelord shit, and there is a brutal r*pe scene that is completely unnecessary in regards to the plot. It's a fine film, competently made and even enjoyable at times, but not a great Halloween film. Last film in the series tonight (until later this year, anyways!).

That’s hilarious, and I totally read the headline as box too so they got me.

I do have to disagree with that series not being worth watching after 3 though, because I saw Inferno on TV way too late one night when I was way too young and it got into my head in a huge way. The whole plot of hallucinations and existential terror and cyclical punishment and pain was way more than what I thought I was in for. I still think that one scared me more than the original, but timing I’m sure has something to do with that.

    Maybe so, maybe not.

Did not realize Hereditary was coming out on Friday. Oh baby.

  12. Zombie's Halloween II is a truly bad film. It manages to mash together the half-baked symbolism he'd double-down on in Lords of Salem with music video cinematography, awful dialogue, poor acting, unlikeable characters, and a Michael Meyers that is consistently grunting and at one point actually tells Loomis to "Die!" Meyers becoming a drifter was an interesting concept until it became his plotline for the entire movie, which is almost two hours but feels closer to three-plus. Honestly surprised I disliked it this much, it's easily my least favorite of the series...just exhausting and unpleasant to sit through.

The one saving grace of these films is Brad Dourif as the Sheriff. Only really knowing him for his voice role as Chucky, his performance was consistently charming and engaging - one of the only likeable characters throughout both of Zombie's entries.

And that's a wrap on Halloween (for now, anyways). Thanks for reading/putting up with my reactions to each film itt. I'm moving to Pittsburgh tomorrow, might try to record that horror franchise podcast pilot and pick another franchise to start within the month.

Planning to see Hereditary soon so I caved and finally got a MoviePass. Still haven't seen A Quiet Place and that Suspiria trailer has me fully hyped. I'm pretty sure between horror movies, Marvel movies, and stuff I might not otherwise feel inclined to pay for I'll get a ton of use outta this thing.

yeah I'm not a fan of Zombie's Halloween films. not only did he de-mystify Michael Myers, but he did it with the most cliché, oh he came from abusive white trash so clearly it makes sense he's a psycho. really ruined it for me, among a lot of other things. but your take on maybe it would've worked better as an original tale instead of Halloween, I could see that.

Once I saw the hype bubbling for Hereditary strictly through effusive praise in headlines I avoided all trailers, plot information, reviews. Going to go in pretty much blind this weekend.

eh, i remain unconvinced re Suspiria. i'm uncertain what remaking brings to the table, particularly given the wholly unique tone, visual language, and campy feel the original had. part of the mystique of Suspiria is its absurdity as a film - admittedly this viewing is informed by the time i watched it high, but i can't imagine ever wanting to watch Suspiria and going, well, i'll watch the remake, as the tone or style or meta-humor or gore or whatever is better. I also didn't really like Call Me By Your Name, though.

Normally I’m against remaking movies that are classics on their own, but every now and then you get something like The Thing or True Grit for another genre and that gives me hope for this actually being worth it. It’s a pretty crazy choice to take on.

i understand why folks think Guadagnino is up to the task of remaking it since he's got some low key arthouse chops going on, but hollywood is so soullessly into remakes and franchises (especially in horror) that my expectations for one - especially for suspiria - are almost inherently low.

  25. Cargo is decent. I didn't love it, but the movie accomplishes what it set out to do very well.
