Lars von Trier is a misogynist hack. Count me out on anyone trying to garner sympathy for him by describing crowds as “too PC” or “looking to be offended.”

I’d never heard of him until today, nor have I seen any of his movies. But I love Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman, and the trailer for this looks great

This sums him up as a person nicely

he's definitely an asshole and has become far too committed to the whole provocateur bit to be taken seriously, but to say he's always been a hack and hasn't made some brilliant films is more out of touch than he is

Depends on what you find brilliant, I guess. I don’t find any of his films to be particularly interesting outside of the obvious attempt at shock value. I also don’t think it’s out of touch to dislike a filmmaker who built a career on depicting the abuse of women just to piss people off.

Oh for sure, I have very conflicting feelings towards him to the point that I haven't bothered with Nymphomaniac. Dogville is easily one of the best films I've ever seen from a period where he was a lot more empathetic. Saying he's a piece of shit is fine, saying he's always been a talentless hack really undermines whatever point could have been made there in my opinion

von trier and i are complicated. bjork, i think, accused him of horrible and/or abusive working conditions. breaking the waves and antichrist, i think, both have compelling feminist messages or at least readings. sometimes he gets lost in his own desire to be provocative, but i wouldn't go so far as to call him talentless, certainly at least not in terms of cinematic ability. that said, it also sounds like he's a piece of shit, so i can hardly blame anyone for ignoring him.

Yeah, I may outright ignore his work from now on too, I respect Bjork way too much to validate that behaviour, tainted an otherwise great film. All I meant to say was coming at him as talentless (objectively false) is sidestepping the real reason to ignore him with far more merit imo

It's the equivalent of responding to allegations towards a band as "they always sucked" as if that was the issue in question, idk. It's cheap to try and talk quality when that should be so removed from a conversation of broader ethics

The whole Druid curse origin story was actually established in the beginning of the first film’s novelization that came out in 1978. The movie and sequels just happened to ignore it until part 6.

Edit: Just checked but Carpenter had that idea (though it was Celtic) and Michael being tied to Samhain. Whoever wrote the novel went off on that idea while basing it on the screenplay. I read the book a few years ago and I think the curse existed for centuries and Michael just happened to latest recipient when he was born.

The exorcist tv show was pretty special. It was amazing seeing such a diverse cast in horror as well.

When it comes to Leprechaun, I've seen the sequels in bits so many times that I can't actually pick apart what movie is what in my head. However, I didn't realize until recently that i've never sat and watched the first one fully. I either never realized or completely forgot that it was Jennifer Aniston's first movie. Boy was it baaaaaaaaaaad.

I adore the Leprechaun series, warts and all. Leprechaun was THE character that scared me as a kid. It was all the ear biting that made me scared at night.

Crazy that Warwick Davis can pull off such a sinister character since I watched Willow as a kid. You can tell he loves playing it since he's done all the sequels

  24. Leprechaun is an annual watch for me but I've also only seen pieces of the sequels

Warwick Davis fans: you all owe yourselves a viewing of the HBO comedy series Life's Too Short. I've rarely laughed harder in my life at a tv show.
