Why would they though? His most recent work is bad and he hasn't worked in years. It's not exactly a safe bet. But someone should be willing to take that risk.

They'd double it on name alone. No one remembers The Ward.

I'm just saying that I see the risk. Is Carpenter's name really selling anything to general audiences?

But yes, they absolutely should because it probably would pay off.

I just don't buy that the issue is that he can't get financed, I think it's his choice to not have directed in 15 years.

Why would it be surprising? Nobody wanted to finance Lynch, nobody wants to finance Coppola.

I'm agreeing with you that it should happen. But I can still be realistic here, and the names don't sell to all the people outside our bubble here. Lynch even had Twin Peaks The Return to show he still had it and then everyone ghosted him. And even getting that season was a miracle.

I guess I have nothing to base it on, but I do feel like Carpenter's name has grown in acclaim in the last 15 years and he definitely has more name recognition amongst normies than Lynch.

I would also venture to guess that all those studios I mentioned have gone out to him about doing something, Blumhouse for sure. I think he's either unsure if he could pull it off, doesn't want to deal with the bullshit that comes with making a film, or is so selective about the circumstances that'd he accept to make a movie that it makes it prohibitive (purposely?)

Basically, I think he loves making movies, but he doesn't like making movies and he's keeping himself out of the game. If he really wanted to he could go the Shyamalan route.

Need a movie directed by John Carpenter starring Sabrina Carpenter. They can collab on the score.

  12. holy shit, the lady hitting the electrified water and immediately exploding in The Monkey hahaha. This movie rules. Enjoying it quite a bit more than Longlegs from a tonal standpoint

edit: the shotgun in the closet, too lol. good lord. don't get the mixed reviews on this one, it's outrageous.

  13. The deaths are way too funny for me to take the serious parts seriously

I honestly didn't get the impression that you were supposed to take any part of The Monkey seriously tbh. It fully played as a comedy to me and I really enjoyed it as one

  15. Yep. I had a way harder time taking parts of Longlegs seriously. This one felt way more sure if its tone.

Really wanna read the story now. I liked the little nods to other King/Horror stuff too. Also the one skater kid who at the end takes the bees to the face was so familiar to me the whole movie and it only clicked after that it was Corey from Halloween Ends

every time I go to see a movie based on King it's about 45% me going to see if there's any Dark Tower references lol

  21. felt like the tone of King's writing was really apparent in great way in this one. Perkins is a great visual director, but definitely does better when he keeps the writing simple. (the third act definitely went off the rails, but not enough to sway my enjoyment of the movie as a whole)

I was very close to loving The Monkey but it mostly lost me beginning with the time jump and some of the less effective attempts at jokes (“you know I don’t go into your room anymore after finding that stiff sock!”), and I’m sorry to say, but I really did not like the actor who played the adult version of Bill. The character with the wig also did not work for me at all.

I’ll probably give it another shot at some point as I did think the first 25 minutes or so we’re a lot of fun. It just didn’t maintain the right sort of goofiness for me and I could not have cared less about adult Bill and adult Hal. The kills were undeniably fun but mostly just made me want to rewatch the Final Destination movies.

I’m glad everyone has been loving it, I just wish I had the same experience!
