hey man you legitimately don’t seem to enjoy posting here (you’ve left and come back like 19 times) and are being antagonistic to people in this thread (one of the best/most welcoming threads on the site) so maybe just cool it a bit or don’t post?

Gonna shift gears away from everything that occurred the last page or two and mention that I’ll be seeing my first John Waters flick this week! Our local bar movie club is showing Serial Mom on Wednesday

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

Just saw the trailer for The Rule of Jenny Pen and it looks absolutely wild lol

where's a good place to start with Waters? i know people love Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos, but i think i'm gonna pass on the latter for now given some of its content

I do though, why else would I post on another account? Beyond that, I said what I said: Y’all do your thing but if I don’t agree with it, I will not respond to it and y’all do your own thing. That’s more than reasonable and fair I think

Female Trouble is probably the best Waters film to get into as a newbie.

I’d say Hairspray or Serial Mom

Hairspray is John’s most accessible movie imo so if you’re worried about the controversy, that’s a good one to start with. Cry Baby and Serial Mom are also great starting points too.

Female Trouble if you want to go all in.
Cry Baby if you want to ease your way into his stuff.

i don't mind bizarre, i just don't want my first exposure to his work to be shit-eating and prolapse
edit: and apparently animal cruelty too?

Pink Flamingos is not for everyone so that’s understandable. I honestly almost threw up at the last scene with I last watched it so I know where you’ve coming from. Female Trouble imo is the zenith of that period of John’s career and is best to watch to avoid those things, plus it’s a fantastic movie on its own merits.

This is the case for most of these idiots, to be fair. They can’t help themselves.

  16. Are you talking about the Reddit thread you were posting in on r/brandnew? Is that where people like to talk about how bad this community is?

The scene in your edit is easily skippable - if you ever need me to give you the timestamp, let me know.

  19. hell yeah man, enjoy

As someone who could not vibe with the animal cruelty on Pink Flamingos, I highly, highly recommend Serial Mom even though it is very much less intense that a lot of his work (from my understanding, I'm no expert)

Serial Mom is fun, but I personally think something like Cry Baby or Hairspray strikes a better balance between what one would expect from Waters and semi-mainstream appeal.

  21. I think it was more of an opportunistic thing as someone there was going in on Jason/Chorus, but regardless. I've always had a fine relationship with this user, I don't mean to antagonize further, but I really don't understand coming back to a site you hate over and over or immediately getting defensive when multiple regulars take issue with something you're saying as opposed to, you know...reflecting on it.

Anyways, goes without saying but this thread remains my favorite on the site and I'm really proud of how few issues we run into in here, even when we disagree on a movie or director.
