  3. First Immaculate, then First Omen, is there an overabundance of religious horror?

    no

  4. I just don't have a lot of interest in The First Omen. I don't know. Immaculate worked for me because it was bonkers lol. I can do slow, and I can do religious in doses, but I'm worried this one will be both.

I wasn't that interested despite quite liking the trailer, mainly because I don't really like the original, but I've seen enough praise around to give it a shot.

The First Omen was good but I think I definitely went in with higher expectations than I should have allowed myself. Also seeing Immaculate and then this in such a short span did me no favors - there are a number of parallels in the basic premise of each movie alone. However, it connects nicely to the original film and there are some pretty shocking scenes in this that had me on my heels. The kind of thing that had me impressed folks backed this film and took a shot on it financially. There are some scenes that reminded me of Jacob's Ladder and another one that is almost certainly paying homage to Possession. All in all, I liked it and Nell Tiger Free is great - it was cool seeing her get to show off more of her talents because I feel like most people only know her from Servant and while I think she is great in that, it's very a subdued character.

I know I watched it all the time when I was a kid but I’m not sure if my parents took me to see it in theaters. So I guess I have no choice but to go now

Just had an earthquake in South Jersey/Philly. This is where my doomsday horror movie begins. Wish me luck!

  23. Gourley and Rust started their mish-mash slasher season on Patreon, so I'll probably rewatch the Joe Bob episode of that tonight followed by President's Day. Less strictly horror, but feeling Donnie Darko and Upgrade tomorrow night. We'll see.

Man, First Omen was pretty damn good. Definite bummer there are similar beats to Immaculate (with them released so close together) and the twist was pretty obvious, but it was made with care and had some genuine creepy parts and imagery. Some great lighting and cinematography as well. Free was great (that scene after the car wreck!) and Stevenson could be a force in the genre.
