Very pumped, just saw that the small AMC across my apt is showing Late Night With the Devil tonight!

It’s weird because it’s such a minor part of the film, why fuck up for that little part in a movie full of practical effects? Just a bummer

Knocking out classics and saw Chopping Mall last night, one of the dumbest

Chopping Mall is an all timer for me. My wife hates it and refuses to watch it with me.

Recommending Love Lies Bleeding. It's not horror by any means, but it's gritty and pulpy and has some intense scenes of violence. Didn't love Saint Maud, but really dug this. Hope that Rose Glass keeps keepin on.

Chopping Mall is a perfect movie.

  8. Is there more info about use of AI in Late Night in the Devil? I'm just curious if that person is speculating, or if they know something about the production, or if it's something blatantly obvious when you see the movie, etc. Supposed to be double-featuring that with Immaculate in theaters this weekend.

I believe my theater is also doing a secret screening of Sting on Monday, but I legitimately don't think I can handle that one. Will be using my Cinemark rewards ticket to catch Ghostbusters next week, very prepared for it to suck (would love for that not to be the case).

  10. Thank you, very interesting. Definitely sucks. I can't think of a good reason to "experiment with AI," especially just on three still images if that is in fact the case, other than not having to pay more to the graphics and production team, who they praise highly in the statement, so...idk. I wonder if anyone from those teams will eventually say anything or clarify what they know.

I think it safe to say they shouldn't have done it while recognizing saying stuff like “I can’t enjoy the amazing performances and clever ending.” is kind of obnoxious and self-righteous. Wasn't this filmed like in 2022 as well? The conversation around AI has evolved quite a bit since then, ignorance isn't a defense, but I can see a couple of indie filmmakers being interested in a new technology and wanting to try it out without understanding the ramifications we know now.

Yeah it’s very minimal but it still sucks. They probably weren’t thinking about two years ago but they had plenty of time to fix it, especially for something so minor.

I get anyone who still wants to see it or anyone who’s fully out on it now. There’s also a middle ground of waiting a month to see it on Shudder.

I think being fully out on it is silly. AI sucks, it stinks that they used it. But the principal is that AI is taking from art/artists. A person boycotting the film is punishing all of the artists that worked on it that didn’t have anything to do with the AI.

  14. I thought the fight against ai in movies had more to do with it replacing writing and acting, a hard stance against three still frames is odd

The one person spearheading the anti-campaign on Twitter is posting “Kill yourself” gifs about the creators so uhhhh maybe everyone needs to calm down

  16. hoo boy

  17. (I still think it's gonna make for a killer double-feature with Immaculate on Saturday, I'm sorry)

Yeah I'm still convinced it'll be one of my favorites of the year and something I come back to often.

Yup, absolutely agreed. Using AI to generate three images and then tweaking them from there is not great and it’s an unfortunate harbinger of things to come, but it hardly warrants this kind of response.

A lot of people I follow in the horror community are coming down super hard on it, and I get that, but I think calling for a mass boycott is dumb as hell. The justification is "well if we let it slide this time...". Nobody is letting it slide, everyone is calling it out and the director has to give a bunch of statements about it. The hardcore fans who could make it some money in the theater but won't because of AI are just going to sink another theater released horror flick. Production companies don't care about the why, they care about the money it makes. Will just make it harder for smaller horror movies to get into wide release

I truly do not give a shit that 3 panels of very simple art were AI, but hey that is just me.

  24. I get why people are upset, even if it’s only a small mark on the film. AI is a threat to the arts and should be ostracized where possible, and I think the argument can be made that if it was only for (based on what I’ve read) three still images, then that seems like a small and reasonable enough job to task to an actual human person.

But of course people have lost the ability to act normal about anything online anymore, which sucks. It should be enough to make people aware of the issue without KYS posting or immediately calling for a boycott. Also, not that this is the issue at all, but that “shadowbanning” thing rubbed me the wrong way because A) that’s really just conspiracy theorist speak for “I haven’t seen enough validation for posting my hot take” and B) what on earth would letterboxd have to gain by doing such a thing lol
