  1. First world problem, but I'm going insane. The Funhouse isn't streaming anywhere. Hellraisers are no longer on Max. Adult Swim Yule Log, which was an exclusive I was so excited to watch again, isn't streaming anywhere. I hate feeling like a film you're interested in might stop existing at any moment if you don't own a physical copy

  8. Rewatched The Lodge last night. Maybe the most feel-bad movie I've ever seen. It's a good one, though.

I realized in writing my own screenplay my least favorite horror tropes:

    1. Religion being proved correct (thus making death not that scary). Attachment had this, the Jewish version was more interesting than the Christian version that's been done to death at least.
    2. Movies where nothing happens, or nothing happens until the end. I love a good slow burn, but something has got to happen, a slow burn leading to nothing just feels like nothing to me.
    3. Monsters making the same like creaking/head cracking noises or guttural alien sounds. All the monsters sound the same now so the effect is really not scary anymore. There's so many other noises to make!
    4. A really obvious character flaw/mental health issue that is clearly represented in whatever the monster/villain is. It can be done well, some movies rely on it for the whole plot and can make it work too, but so many movies feel like they hamfist an allegory in but don't have a strong enough story outside of it.
    5. When they build up to this big ghost attack and then they just flash a creepy face and cut to black or glitch out the camera. Does it have to be all out gore or nothing? Show me something!

YES to point number one. I can’t stand it either. I love the movie Frailty, always have, but very much actively dislike the ending.

I hate that exorcism movies are pretty much catholic propaganda

Yep. I respect the legacy and artistry of the original Exorcist, but most exorcism movies bother me for the fact that it’s taking something that was used to traumatize me as a child and turning it into a marketable selling point to the general public which in turn only reinforces those beliefs in the very types of people who traumatized me in the first place and thus the cycle continues in perpetuity.

Like, if demon possession is real and a cross keeps me safe by burning the demons skin like acid, I’ll see ya’ll at Church next Sunday. I’m not scared, I got confirmation all that stuff is real and now I get eternal life? It’s not the worst case scenario.

Definitely #1 on that list for a reason, I specifically wrote out a magic system without any ties to Christianity, I hate a last second cross necklace killing anything.

Also the exorcist does not end well for the priests. I don’t find demons being kind of confirmed and thus at least some religious concepts (it’s just a movie) to be very comforting given that the demon got what it came for.

Saw Thanksgiving at 10PM last night, fun movie.

Also, was this close to seeing it in Hanover, but didn’t because the screening was more packed there than where I ended up going. What a mistake, haha.
