Possession/exorcism movies are one of the first things I remember triggering my anxiety as a kid. I didn't really know what the feeling was at the time, so it was very confusing at the time as I knew it wasn't exactly like just being scared. I've tended to stay away from those subconsciously since.

Hereditary is scarier than Midsommar, but Midsommar has more of what I look for in horror so for me it is better. I should also note that I didn't really like Beau is Afraid very much either

If it's not supernatural then it usually boils down to torture or killing, which can definitely be scary, but there's often no escapism in that. Using a supernatural entity as an allegory for trauma can admittedly feel the same after a while but I'm all for it. That might be what I was getting at when I was comparing It Lives Inside, Talk to Me, Umma, Smile, It Follows, The Ring, etc. I think part of why Midsommar works for me despite being realism is because it feels so unreal.

A few years ago I would've told you that Ari Aster, Robert Eggers, and Jennifer Kent were the most compelling horror directors (and Jordan Peele, but that hasn't exactly changed for me). Hereditary and Babadook traumatized the shit outta me, and I loved The VVitch and Midsommar. However, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, and The Nightingale, while very good, turned out to be not very horror-y. I guess Beau is Afraid functions better as a dark comedy, but it's still the only film from the three directors that I didn't particularly enjoy. I think right now, looking at directors with at least two films, I'm probably most excited for Radio Silence, Ti West, and Julia Ducournau (and Jordan Peele). There have been a shit ton of really impressive directorial debuts recently though

 

Wrapped up the last 3 eps of Midnight Mass today and man that was SO GOOD, Hamish Linklater especially.

Supernatural I guess out of those two, but home invasion movies just hit on another level for me.

 

I love supernatural / paranormal stuff, but hate when religion gets involved. If a monster is repelled by a cross or something then the afterlife is real and death is no longer scary. Totally takes me out of it.

Watched Hereditary! Listening to Gabriel Byrne's fake American accent was a bit distracting. Movie wasn't scary at all to me, but it was still reallyy good.

 

Horror movies don't usually scare me anymore, but I've said it before and I'll say it again...Skinamarink made me afraid to walk up the stairs in the dark.

 

The only movie I can remember that made me have trouble sleeping was the 1999 house on haunted hill. Evil spirits + a haunted asylum = my worst nightmare

 

Okay, even though Hereditary didn't scare me at the time, my fiance decided to run an errand while I was in the shower and my cat was making noises around the apartment. Scariest shit any time I closed my eyes to rinse my hair haha. Made me wish I had a glass door shower instead of curtains

 

Hereditary stuck with me for months ughhh

 

I think I just don't like when movies save all the scary stuff until the end of the movie? Slow build ups are okay, but I mean, at least have some stuff happening by the halfway mark. Hereditary was better than The VVitch, Babadook and Midsommar in that department tho

 

Talk To Me had a few parts that really shook me.

last movie I really remember keeping me up all night was the first Paranormal Activity.

 

I did like No One Will Save You for a lot of reasons, but that’s the exact kind of creature design that doesn’t truly scare me.

They had something with how fast it was walking at the beginning, when it was more hidden and you don’t see the full body. But showing a big one fully lit up screaming all weird? Makes it more of a joke than scary.

 

Paranormal Activity didn't scare me but I had some fun stomping in the halls at night after to scare my sisters

Paranormal stuff is way scarier to me than slasher stuff. Most slasher stuff I find campy, but in a good way. I love all those corny 80s slasher movies. They’re entertaining but not scary. Maybe I’m just very brave.

 

That new movie, Totally Killer, has some reviews popping up. Seeing mostly 7s, so basically what I expected. I’ll probably love it

My professional life/vacation really derailed my September horror film viewing. Gonna pick it back up this weekend. Might do Overlord tonight.
